I was not a fan of the Majin Rebellion arc.
In fact I took a several months-long break from DBM during it because quite frankly I didn't care for the current plot, and imagine my surprise when I returned that it was STILL GOING. It's essentially a bunch of filler riddled with Plot Induced Stupidity, and any small character growth that could come out of this arc will be as reviled as Bra herself is.
Anyway, let's begin!
Part 1:
I was initially going to make one big Mega Post, but found that I kept procrastinating on it. So releasing in parts is more ideal for my time schedule.
Part 1 is going to cover everything from Babadi's spell activating to the fight breaking out.
1. What even is Babadi's goal?
Well he says it on page 1346:
Alright, so he's going to control the universes. ...How does he intend to do this? We're all currently in Universe 0 right now, which is full of nothing. Just a page prior to this, Frieza blew up the Vargas and their teleportation technology.
- Why does Babadi not secure a ship that would allow him to actually travel to these universes with his new army and conquer them one by one?
- Why doesn't he move in and seize the Vargas control room instead of blowing it up? He's got an evil Vargas in his employ that could work the controls after all.
- Why doesn't he try and grab a set of Dragon Balls? All he needs is a living Namekian Elder, and he can have King Piccolo speak the wishes in Namekian.
- Why did he leave two of the most powerful fighters (the Gohans) in the arena when he teleported everyone? We know Babadi can be selective with it so why leave them in at all when a single Gohan is stronger than every fighter other than Bra?
- Why didn't he take the control room and use the teleportation technology to just teleport away meddlesome people like Gohan? Send him back to U16 or something? If anything one of the heroes (Piccolo would be a good choice here) should've blown it up to stop Babadi from attaining Ultimate Victory.
The fight hasn't even started yet and it's already beginning to unravel. So let's move on to the beginning of Chapter 59.
- Why would Babadi send the teleported fighters like Gast and Goku to a planet that even has an atmosphere at all? Why not just teleport them to space or at the very least a dead planet or moon with no atmosphere?
- Why is Vegito so confident that Bra can handle Babadi's little rebellion? He's Half-Vegeta, so he knows all about Majinization! He's not worried the same will happen to Bra? Considering we know she's evil, Vegito's thoughts are, well,
So then the fight breaks out. Again, what is the goal here?
Initially it isn't too bad. U16 and U18 break loose, and some Majinized fighters rush in to stop them. Meanwhile Dabura and the Kaioshin start fighting. U19 has a shootout with itself. Frieza then tells his minions on page 1369 to "handle the spectators". Why? Again, what is Babadi's goal here? This is just slaughter for the sake of slaughter. Chaos for the sake of chaos.
- How does wasting the Ginyu Force and the Armored Squadron on a bunch of cannon fodder that even U18 Videl can fight off help Babadi? Is there literally nothing more important they could be doing? Look for the Vargas ship so they can actually escape this dead universe? Act as additional guards for Babadi? Take a Videl hostage to stop Gohan from finding Babadi that much sooner? No, they’re just going to start randomly killing people? Oh, okay.
The only person with a SMART idea so far is U18 Piccolo, who tells U18 Gohan to go after Babadi. ...Then instead of helping he decides to settle a personal grudge against Frieza. Sigh.
Imagine if instead of Piccolo abandoning the sensible strategy of helping eliminate Babadi--and thus end all the Majinization IN ONE FELL SWOOP--and settle a grudge, imagine if oh I dunno...Piccolo made a beeline to a still intact control room to try and save the fight *that way*, and THEN have the Frost Demons intercept Piccolo on the way. You can still have Piccolo fight them. You can still have the dialogue of him avenging the Namekian race. You can still have that incredibly silly and pointless scene of his Special Beam Cage Cannon or whatever the hell it is. Now he's actually working towards something instead of fighting "just because".
The chapter ends with U18 Gohan breaking down the door to Babadi's apartment to find nobody there. This is a good thing. Babadi is smart enough to take some type of defensive measure at the very least. Always nice to end on a good note.
