We've still got a few days to kill before the tournament chapter begins, so why not?
3. Fighting 50% Frieza
I may be weird, but I like this better than SSGoku vs. Frieza. Kaioken x20 doesn't work, so Goku tries the Spirit Bomb--the most ultimate, do-or-die, last-ditch-effort final attack of all time. Back when I first saw this episode on TV in 1999 and that enormous energy ball zoomed in on Frieza...Man, I was certain that it worked. Then Frieza comes back, kills Piccolo (kinda), kills Krillin, and he's going to kill Gohan, and Goku can't stop him. And then the Super Saiyan happens.
The 50% fight has more emotional highs and lows, and it's great storytelling. The Super Saiyan transformation is the climax of the whole fight; thefive minute two-hour long battle afterward is just resolution. While SSGoku vs. Max Frieza is more interesting to watch since the two fighters are more equal, Goku's basically got the win in the bag after he transforms, so there's not as much tension.
2. Buu Catches the Spirit Bomb
Have you ever heard this song? It's called Ginyu Transformation. In the Funimation Dub this music often gets used when something big happens, like Goku going "YOU FOOL" to Frieza, when 17 kills Gero, when Trunks goes crazy, when Gohan kills Cell, so on. In the Funimation Dub, when Mr. Buu's rescued Vegeta and Kid Buu is finally by himself and Goku throws the Bomb, "Ginyu Transformation" plays again. A long-time Funimation watcher like myself will think, "Hey, it's that music again! Kid Buu's about to die! Oh yeah!" And then Buu catches the Bomb.
I'm 99% certain whoever Funimation put in charge of the music didn't plan this neat little musical fake-out, but it's a great moment.
1. Gohan kills Cell
Back in my Teen Gohan fanboy days, Gohan vs. Cell was my favorite fight. Nowadays, not so much--it's kinda boring compared to Goku vs. Cell. But the final beam struggle is a different story. Frieza wasn't as intense because SS Goku always had the edge, and against Buu they could use the Dragon Balls to help. Against Cell, though? There is no backup plan. It's the most desperate moment of the series, and tops off its ownage with the coolest DBZ image ever:
Honorable Mention:
This kick. (0:58)
