How many of you have actually watched the original Dragon Ball? I hadn't, but last month I took @thatguy 's advice and gave it a try. I just finished the first tournament, and as it turns out...Dragon Ball is really good! It's a different style from Z, and I like it. The humor's hit-and-miss, and the perverted jokes got old quick, but it's got a nice light-hearted tone, a creative world, and fun characters. Goku and Bulma are a fun pair to watch. It made me realize: Dragon Ball isn't Dragon Ball without Goku, but it's also not Dragon Ball without Bulma. In hindsight all my favorite Z arcs were the ones that included Bulma as a main character (Namek, Cell). Yamcha is cool, early Krillin was...kind of a snot, and then there's Launch. It's a shame Toriyama forgot about her, she's a fun character and Dragon Ball could use more ladies. I like Dragon Ball's style of fights better, too. Energy attacks are actually a big deal! The fights themselves are more interesting because the blows are separately drawn; they aren't just a bunch of "ha-ha-ha-ha" rapid-fire punches and look more like actual martial arts. Power levels aren't a thing, people rely more on technique, and strategy is more important. Each fight is like a puzzle to be solved. I was impressed when Roshi decides to goad Goku into using kicks, because he figures his legs are longer and it'd give him an advantage. When was the last time in DBZ you had someone talking about the length of their legs? Goku's so overpowered nowadays, I'm always rooting against him when he fights and I cheer when he loses. Thankfully he seems to do that a lot in Dragon Ball. Also, Demon Roshi: How did I never know about this? Excited for Red Ribbon Army and then Tien!

Wait until you get to the two Piccolos (father and the one you're all likely familiar with as a good dude)! That is the funniest, goriest, saddest and epic moment of all dragonball sagas. This period of time reflects the perfect synthesis between what you've seen now in early DB vs. what was to come in Z.
I always lol when people reference Frieza as the best villain, as if it was some sort of unquestionable axiom. I always lol because it's obvious they haven't heard about The Demon King Piccolo.
Now that you mention, I must rewatch again. Last time I saw it was likely 2001 or so.

It is a different beast from DBZ, but I love it for that. I'll always love Z and still love crazy ass stuff we got with power levels and planet busters, but there is a charm to original DB. I felt like you when I first saw all of DB from start to finish. The strategy and more diverse skill set and techniques are worth it alone to watch or read from the start IMO. If you liked Krillin, Yamecha, and the other human Z-fighters you are going to love DB. That is them at their peak and when they have great moments and amazing fights. A lot of people would still say Yamecha was a joke even back in those days, but his fights to me were still pretty good and was endearing character to me.
Red Ribbon Army arc and Tien/22nd Martial Arts Tournament arcs are some of my favorites. The Piccolo arcs are just awesome in their own right too. Those arcs are probably the best bridge for DB and later Z elements. It is at that point where the high stakes and crazy power battles are introduced, but strategy and technique are still important. It's been so long since I watched the old DB too. It might be fun to re-watching it as well.

I have not only seen the original dragon ball, I have also read it too (got the entire manga collection for DB and DBZ). The tournaments (Jackie Chan, Tien, and Piccolo Jr) sagas are freaking epic, with the Red Ribbon, Fortuneteller Baba , and King Piccolo arcs being fantastic as well. The Pilarf saga was quite slow to me, but the humor made it up for me (Oolong wishes for panties is freaking funny). Unlike DBZ, the fights in DB are more technical (like Ashanark has said, the fighting sequences are separately drawn for longer choreography), with it being on the level of "humans" to achieve. No super crazy aliens (ignore the facts abut Goku and Piccolo as being one), mind blowing transformations, or intergalactic / time travel. Just straight up melee in a mortal realm (along with demons, advanced technology, magic, and crazy haired girls lol)! As for King Piccolo, he is freaking terrifying in many ways in this story. Christopher R. Sabat does a AMAZING job voicing him, and you will know why many people feared that demented namek as the Daimao.

I haven't seen all of DB, just the parts until either the end of the RR saga or the tournament with Jackie Chun, whichever comes later. I'd grown up with Z so I preferred the flashy battles and sci fi themes more but I did enjoy it nonetheless (though I mainly watched because I thought that after a while they'd start playing DBZ).
At a certain point they started playing the series over from the beginning, then replaced it with Transformers. One of the Unicron focused shows, thank god.
I also read the volume where Chi Chi proposes to Goku and Piccolo Jr enters the fray, along with Kami finally making himself useful. Poor Yamcha couldn't make it in battles even back then.

Working on collecting the mangas right now. It's cool to see the evolution of the series from the first chapter to the present.

I meant the volumes that cover the Z anime, not that they are two separate manga.

Hey Ashanark how far are you now in DB. If you are in the Red Ribbon Army saga, you are gonna love Mercenary Tao lol. He was really bad ass back in the day. It was cool that Z brought the character back for a few filler episodes. The way he got around was the embodiment of ridiculous yet somehow cool.
