Just curious what if Yamcha avoided his Saibamen's Kamikaze attack? He isn't the type to fight Nappa recklessly like Tien. So he would likely of been around to help with Pickles' strategy so maybe they wouldn't have needed to rely so much on Gohan, He could also have helped gang up on Nappa with Pickles and Krillin.
Nappa was a great warrior though so He likely would have still won. But Yamcha I believe probably had some cool tricks we never got to see, such as his spirit ball he used in the movies. Perhaps they could have stalled with Nappa Longer, or even have killed him? Maybe he would have survived till Goku Showed up, that means he could have gone to Namek with them. It would be like they had one more Krillin! Not the something to completely ignore!

Either that or Nappa dodges and the Kienzan strikes Yamcha, making surviving the Kamikaze attack ultimately pointless. |

Either that or Nappa dodges and the Kienzan strikes Yamcha, making surviving the Kamikaze attack ultimately pointless.
Krillin then taunts the Saiyan and launches the Kienzan. If Nappa tries to dodge it, Yamcha has the more manoeuvrable Sokidan on top of him and hit in the head, for example, as he jumps, blocking his momentum. Bye bye Nappa. |

Ultimately it probably plays out the same as canon. I don't think Yamecha would change much at all. If Yamecha survives that means they would continue the Saibamen match up in a bid to buy time. The Z-fighters were getting a bit too excitable. Tien and Yamecha beat their enemies as fast as possible forgetting all about buying time. I think Krillin and Chaozu would be the same way. By the time Piccolo's turn rolled around he would have taken the remaining two himself to get to the real fight. From there it is the Nightmare of Nappa hits them hard and fast. Once he powers up all their morale from defeating Saibamen goes right out the window.
Let's say he does replace Gohan in the formation the plain simple fact is Yamecha launched an attack it wouldn't be strong enough to kill Nappa or even injury him. Tien's Tri-Beam only scratched him. He unleashed all his lifeforce for that blast and all it did was scratch and scrap Nappa. A regular ki technique would likely not harm Nappa much at all. He would just be pissed and make Yamecha his next victim. Tien, Chaozu, and Yamecha would probably still all die. Krillin would shout Goku's name, sparking Vegeta's interest. They still wait 3 hours for Goku to show up.

You don't need to be as strong as Nappa to hurt him, Vegeta was pointing out Nappa needed to take Power Level 3k seriously, its likely way weaker then Nappa, I'm agree with Saligir that Nappa is probably closer to 7k then 4k. They had a solid plan, if it was Krillin and Yamacha smacking Nappa into Pickles' Attack he could have gotten crippled or killed.
I'm pretty sure Vegeta would murder everyone before goku got there if they took out nappa.
And even if it was similar to how things happened how would it turn out on Namek with Yamcha?

Hurting Nappa and killing him are two very different things though. Keep in mind Chazou blew himself up and Tien used Tri-Beam, which were extremely powerful and caught Nappa off guard and they failed to do the job. It is more likely that had Yamecha or Piccolo had replaced Gohan in the formation that Nappa would have tanked their blast and just continued to attack them. I don't think Yamecha surviving would change much. Spirit Ball would hurt Nappa, but it probably wouldn't do major damage. Even if they used it as a distraction so Krillin could try trusty Destructo Disk, chances are Vegeta would warn him about it, Nappa dodges it and they are back in the same place as before. |

If Yamcha wasn't destroyed by the Saibamen, then he would simply get a lovely 'bear" hug from Nappa at some point, thus ensuring him safe passage to Other World. XD

Nappa defended himself last minute from, Tian, he even puts his arms up, and Chiaotzu he just girds himself for the explosion as it was hurting him as Chiaotzu was powering up. There is a big difference between being aware of an attack and struck, and preparing yourself. Krillin and Gohan can knock Nappa on his ass when they suckerpunch him, yet when Nappa is prepared for the strikes he can punch Gohan's energy blasts away, or tank Krillins energy blasts.
He even notes he put up last minute defenses, Tians Kikoho would have otherwise severly wounded him since he used his entire lifeforce in the attack.
