With all the characters in DBZ I believe there is a lot of wasted potential for characters. And I believe Goten and Trunks fit this perfectly. After they learned the fusion dance they pretty much only were there to form Gotenks. Before learning the fusion dance every character of the main cast pointed out how much potential they had at their young age.
I don't see them going past ssj2 but still with two young super saiyans in the series who only purpose is to fuse is so wasteful. As they got older they wouldn't have to be exercise freaks like their fathers but still maintain their training to surpass each other. Have the two be best friends and rivals.
This isn't necessarily a waste but something they could have improved. When it comes to transforming into a super saiyan and treatment of the form. I think it would have been cooler if they incorporated the false ssj form or pseudo super saiyan. When on namek instead of Vegeta gaining a zenkai boost and constantly false claiming to be a super saiyan, he could have transformed into the fssj form, gain just as much power, and wit the form it would show that transforming you'll not only need that anger trigger but also control its power which is why Goku wouldn't use the form later because he not only was angry but controlled his anger and power.
Gohan could have seen with the form when fighting Dr. Gero and Andriod 19 and later when training with Goku, the veteran saiyan would explain the fssj form and how to bypass it.
Also the ssj is wasted potential as well. After Buu was released it was treated as a basic weak transformation. This form took years to master and once hitting the fpssj state the power outlet is incredibly useful. Even during the Buu Saga most of Babidi's henchman couldn't even face a ssj which still shows that even the basic controlled form isn't something to joke around with.
Once Buu is released, GT happened and now Super, super saiyan is a used a scaling method to benchmark a fighters powerlevel and no longer a threatening form. Sucks too since SSJ1 is one of my favorite forms since it has so many variants to it. ASSJ, USSJ, LSSJ, FPSSJ, such a cool transformation.
