Top 5 Favorites:
[Note: goes from favorite to least-favorite]
1. Resurrection F / Fukkatsu No F - This movie is hands down my absolute most favorite since it captures everything that makes me love DBZ. Everybody gets to shine (nearly all of the z-fighters besides Yamcha, Gotenks, Chiaotzu, and Yajirobe), Frieza returns stronger than ever, introduction to Super Saiyan Blue, and amazing fighting choreography. But just like every great anime movies, there are a few "problems" that I do have with it...
-Beerus and Whis ultimately did nothing but eat and talk shit lol. While it is true that Whis did trained Goku and Vegeta while performing his temporal Do-Over at the end, I would have liked to see these two fight Frieza at least once.
-Gotenks did not appear in the movie while he does in the super anime. If he did appeared in the movie, I would have liked to see him him fight against First Form Frieza as a SSJ3 before ultimately losing.
-No Captain Ginyu to switch bodies with Tagoma to fight, and ultimately die against Vegeta
-Tagoma dying at the very beginning of the movie, thus making his character become very pitiful and disappointing.
-Piccolo and Tien does not attempt to fight Frieza at any point. I would have liked the strongest human and namekian attempting to take down the strongest Frost Demon without the aid of saiyans!
-Gohan being a complete wimp. Wish he had attempted to still train (thus being in his ultimate form) so that he could have taken down Shisami, Ginyu / Togama (if appeared or survived the beginning), and trying to fight First Form Frieza which may have even forced him to go to his Second Form.
-Freeza going from his namek saga PL to the level of gods in four freaking months! What kind of training did he do, and how much stronger he could have gotten if he completed his training to achieve the "Pure-Golden Ultimate Evolution Form"?
-Piccolo struggling against Shisami.. nuff said
-Goku being taken down from a sneak attack by Sorbet's Ring Laser. Even weakened from fighting Frieza, such a pitiful PTO weapon shouldn't have pierced the body of a SSJ Blue so easily, but we are unfortunately are not the writers lol.
-Most importantly of all, Vegeta barely fighting Frieza at all in this film. Truth be told, I wish he fought Frieza instead of Goku and ultimately manages to kill Frieza, thus granting him the honor to kill a major villain for once. But alas, such a milestone was plucked from his grasp by Frieza blowing up the Earth, thus needing Goku to intervene once Whis corrected everything. Such BS...
2. Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan - For the longest time, this was my favorite DBZ movie since it delivers everything a one-time eight-year old boy loved the most; fighting and more fighting. To this day, I always get that "god feeling /the shivers, etc" when I see Broly becoming the Legendary Super Saiyan before Goku and Vegeta. The laughter, lightning strikes, music, choreography, was goddamn perfection itself! And the following beatdown Broly delivered to the z-fighters was legendary in it's brutality and delivery. Here is a quick list of what I think should have been added / deleted to the movie to make it even better..
-Perfect Cell does not sense the fighting during his 10 day wait for the Cell Games. Thus, this is why I love American Vigor's version of this story, since it addresses this issue.
-Gohan never used his hidden potential to fight against Broly. As a SSJ2, he could have mopped the floor with Broly.
-Goku acting like a complete moron throughout the entire movie. While bad in most episodes, this movie made him into a complete battle junkie with a ferocious appetite for the sake of comedy. If they had turned the "Goku button" just a notch down, all would have been good.
-Vegeta being a pansy and getting destroyed in two minutes. SMH
-Future Trunks did not use his Ultra Super Saiyan form against Broly. Muscles against even bigger muscles would have been dope lol.
-How much the movie had downplayed Broly's insanity. Think about it! Imagine being born as a powerful mutant where your king authorized your death upon hearing your birth. After getting stabbed in the stomach and thrown out like trash next to your father (thus making Goku's saiyan name as a subconscious trigger to your trauma memories), you tapped into your hidden powers to survive your ENTIRE planet getting destroyed by a galactic overlord. Then you spend the next 30 years living in fear, pain, and with PTSD while trying to fight for survival, only to have your father create a mind-control device to restrain your abnormal rage and power. Broly never had a chance to create his own identity, since others have been either using him, or attempted to take his life. Unfortunately, he placed "all" of his tribulations on Goku, which sucks since it truly wasn't his fault. Such a waste for a potential z-fighter (like Raditz and Bardock)...
-The last minute battle between Goku and Broly. Not only it was incredibly rushed (seriously, one punch each), but it wasted all of the buildup hat was created for that precise moment. I would have liked to see them throw hands for a bit before Goku gave Broly the Dragon Fist-esque gut punch, but we fans can dream right?
3. Fusion Reborn - This movie was amazing in it's concept, though the delivery of certain aspects (like the Earth Invasion) had a rushed tone to it. Nonetheless, the fighting was superb and will forever remain in my personal top 5. Here is my list of critiquing for this movie...
-The rushed nature between the resurrected villains and z-fighters (and everything else that happening all across the universe). I would love to see Gohan, Tien, Krillin, Piccolo, and Gotenks fighting the complete force of Perfect Cell, Cooler, King Cold, Frieza, Bojack, and all of the other henchmen until further notice.
-Vegeta getting destroyed in two minutes before getting launched into a mountain of floating jelly beans. SMH
-Pikkon being used for comedic relief.
-The complete utter lack of a backstory regarding about Janemba. Such a villain deserves a rich backstory [btw, read my post in the thread called "What universe would you add" by Dr. Wheelo to see how I would incorporate this villain into DBM].
-Gogeta quickly killing Janemba. While I do love the "seriousness" off of Gogeta's character, I wish he played with Janemba a little more before finishing him off. Plus seeing a base form Gogeta would be cool to see.
4. Cooler's Revenge - If my memory serves me correctly, this was my first DBZ movie I have ever seen, and boy was I lucky. The fighting, pacing, music, and everything else was fantastic right down to the ending. Only a few problems I have with it.
-No Vegeta..nuff said
-Gohan and Krillin being practically useless (they should be strong enough the defeat the armored squadron)
-Goku not using the SSJ form without being mad first.
5. Lord Slug - Another great film that had lots of great fighting, dialogue, music, and story line. With a powerful Super namekian on a vicious ambition to conquer the galaxy, you know shit is going to get real very quickly. Only had a few problems with this film.
-No complete backstory for Lord Slug. What a shame.
-Piccolo not killing all of Slug's minions like in Cooler's Revenge, before fighting and losing to Slug himself.
-The introduction of the Pseudo Super Saiyan form. 100# filler material right there.
-No easy time placement in the "canon" series.
Top 5 "Decent" Movies:
1. History of Trunks - Easily one of the more "darker" movies ever released, this movie that chronicles the trials and tribulations of Future Trunks and Gohan will forever hold a special place in my heart. With killer androids that are hellbent on eradicating all of humanity at their leisure, we find the last saiyans doing everything possible to defeat them, but fail at every single occasion.
2. Badock: The Father of Goku - Being the second DBZ movie I have ever watched, this movie brings forth a sense of nostalgia to me every time I watch it. Despite the power of foresight Bardock has gained to help prevent his people's destruction, he is ultimately powerless to stop Frieza no matter what he tried. Here is a brief list of things I wish were incorporated into the movie.
-Have Gine, Raditz, and King Vegeta incorporated into the movie, even as cameos if all else fails.
-Glimpses of Bardock's early childhood to his current status as a elite warrior.
-Bardock becoming the very first super saiyan during his match against Frieza. While he would ultimately fail (having a power level of roughly 500,000), it would be highly enjoyable to see the very first SSJ in 1000 years to prevent his peoples destruction. Plus it would create major psychological problms for Frieza down the line, especially when he encounters Goku on Namek.
3. The Dead Zone - This was actually a really good movie despite what others have said about it. Decent plot, good villains, and a scary, wicked atmosphere makes this movie quite enjoyable from beginning to end. And it was the third DBZ movie I had the pleasure to watch! My only complaint is Piccolo not killing all of Garlic Juniors henchmen, but I can live with that (Sansho got it good though, Ocean Dub style lol)
4. The World's Strongest - Another great retro DBZ movie that had some wonderful fighting in it with a decent plot. Everybody in the z team gets some love that are featured in it, which makes me very happy. I do have a few complaints though.
-Piccolo easily getting defeated, followed by getting possessed. Feels highly similar to the first movie in some way on how he always loses in the beginning.
-Piccolo not killing all of the henchmen lol (I seriously got a thing for Piccolo killing all of the grunts if you hadn't noticed yet XD)
-Not seeing a imaginative cameo of Wheelo being in Goku's body. A fanfic needs to be made about this one day, seriously.
5. The Return of Cooler - I remember being in blockbuster back in the day and seeing this movie on the shelf. Ecstatic to see a sequel of one of my favorite (and first actually) DBZ movie, I convinced my mom to rent it for me. Just like the first, it was excellent, but with even more fighting and carnage. Despite my love for it, I do have some issues with it...
-Vegeta lasting practically two minutes, again.
-Despite this movie taking place between the Cell Games, Gohan cannot access the Super Saiyan transformation and Piccolo is not as powerful as Goku despite having Kami fused.
-No history on how the Big Gete Star main computer chip was even created. Such BS..
Top 5 "Crappy / Meh" Movies:
1. Bojack Unbound: This movie had such great potential to be glorious, but the execution was horrible in almost all senses. The only saving grace was Gohan utterly destroying them as a SSJ2 (one of my favorite all-time moments TBH), but that was it. Here is a list of my complaints
-No complete history regarding about Bojack and his Galaxy Solsdiers. For somebody who can rival Perfect Cell, surely they went through Hell to achieve that power on their own.
-Vegeta and Piccolo being practically worthless when fighting against Bojack. Both only lasted like two minutes each!
-Trunks not having his sword when fighting against Kogu. Damn tournament rules...
-Kogu not being as strong as his allies despite being the only member of his race besides Bojaack to have the Super Form. SMH
-Bido not having the Super form himself. He is obviously a perfect candidate.
-Zangya unexplained "transformation" while fighting Krillin. So stupid...
-The human fighters being practically worthless.
-Gohan needing his father's help to ascend to SSJ2. Shouldn't he be able to use that form by will at that point?
-Bojack's rushed transformation sequence. He didn't even need it at all against Vegeta.
2. Wrath of The Dragon - Another movie with great potential, but had poor execution in it. Even when the fighting begun, it felt incredibly one-sided despite all of the techniques the heroes had. Let me "critique" this story...
-No Piccolo in this movie. I would prefer it if he killed Hoi instead of the devious kashvar getting accidentally squashed by Hirudegarn.
-Vegeta and Gohan lasting two minutes in the entire fighting. SMH
-Hirudegarn's unexplained transformation. While cool, it needs to explain how a former demonic statue can metamorph like that.
-Gotenks losing to Super Hirudegarn in one punch. Very stupid (in fact, I wish he was the one to kill him, but alas I cant get my wish).
-A new timeline being created when Tapion going back into the past to live with his people and Minosha. Time travel get crazier by the second in this series.
-The popular discrepancy of Future Trunks getting his sword somehow thanks to the closing credits.
-Goku getting the final kill and looking like he stronger than Gotenks and Gohan. Granted he had figured out the monster weakness and had his Dragon Fist, but I would prefer it if somebody else had came out with the win.
3. Super Android 13 - While Android 13 may hate me for saying this, but this movie was poorly done despite having strong potential in it. So many unique twists could have been made with it, but alas Toei made a utter mockery out of it. Here are some of my reasons...
-The entire existence for androids 13 through 15. In their combined Super form, they are IMO far stronger compared to 17 and 18, so why did Dr. Gero let his computer do the work instead of him doing it personally to hasten their development. With strength most likely between Android 16 and Semi Perfect form Cell (again, my own opinion), he could practically solo anybody if released a "wee-bit" earlier. SMH
-What happened to the future counterparts of androids 13, 14, and 15 in Future Trunks timeline?
-The exact time placement for this storyline. Does it really happen the moment Goku recovers from his heart virus?
-Super 13 acting too much like movie 11 Broly, thus having no personality to speak of.
-Piccolo, Gohan, and Krillin being useless.
4. Tree of Might - Despite having lots of fighting and chaos in it, again only Goku gets to have all of the glory in the end, which pisses me off immensely.
-The human z-fighters failing to defeat and kill their opponents. In the end, Goku is the one to kill them with a burst of his kaio-ken.
-Piccolo being useless and getting his shit kicked in by Turles, twice.
-No history derived from Turles or his Crusher Corps in movie.
-Turles not using his Great Ape form.
-Another Spirit Bomb finisher.
-When exactly does this movie take place at.
5. Battle of Gods - Despite me giving myself so much hype for this movie, it was ultimately a failure in my eyes. While I do like the introduction of Beerus and Whis, their very debut has thrown he entire "power scaling" straight out of the window. With their "godly ki", they easily made short work of the Z-Fighters as they were amateurs, with nothing they did couldn't do jack squat to Beerus. Granted this movie was funny as hell, but that besides the point. Here is my critique for this movie...
-All of the Z-Fighters (Ultimate Gohan, Fat Buu, Tien, Android 18, Piccolo, and SSJ Gotenks) couldn't do anything to Beerus, getting defeated in like one-hit each. Even if Krillin, Yamcha, and Roshi joined the fray, they would have had the same fate. If only Gohan and Gotenks (as a SSJ3 in the Super manga) could have did just a "little" bit more though.
-Vegeta not achieving the infamous "Super Saiyan 3" form instead of having a powered up SSJ2. Would have made a little more epic battle between him and Beerus.
-The plain design of SSJ God and it's pitiful time limit that initially impressed us as being permanent (until the Super manga was released). Plus the battle between God Goku and Beerus wasn't as hyped compared to SSJ Goku and Beerus in my opinion.
-The failed promise of Vegeta becoming a god next (going from SSJ God to Blue) that was retcon in the super anime, and the still pending revelation of all of the other 12 universes and their fighters.
-The retcon of Beerus almost using 70% against God Goku. This lead me to believe that Goku Blue would at the very least be about 90% to Beerus total strength, which proved to be wrong when Resurrection F came out. False leadings are one of my least favorite things because it makes you believe in one path as being fact, while it was completely wrong the entire time. Concurrently, Goku and Vegeta may never surpass Beerus at this rate.
-Beerus comment that it is rare for a saiyan to have pride. Really...
Ans SO much more....
Top 5 Worst Movies:
1. Plan to Eradicate The Saiyans - This OVA would have served better as a full-fledge movie than being a visual creation for a vidoe game. Plus the fact it was only known in Japan for so long made it almost a complete mystery to most die hard DBZ fans for years, with no English dub provided for both the original and remake. What the Hell! While the animation is good with a interesting plot, it had some very poor execution to it. Here is a brief overview of my immense dislike to this special.
-The Destron Gas and how Dr. Raichi utilizes his Ghost Warriors. Mad OP, but toei retcon the notion that "they can only be killed exactly how they died in real life" in like two minutes. Such BS.
-Hatchiyack base form being stronger than LSSJ Broly. If true, he should have curbstomped everyone without ever using his multi, giant, or super form, but that was not the case. Plus his 15 second energy charging weakness is quite pitiful IMO.
-Raichi not merging with Hatchiyack to give that machine mutant a freaking personality.
-Frieza, Cooler, Slug, and Turles not amounting to much. Plus other ghost warriors such as Cold, Wheelo, Android 13, and even Broly would have ant up the stakes.
-Gohan didn't use his hidden potential to destroy Hatchiyack himself.
2. Episode of Bardock - A sad, pitiful continuation of the original Bardock special that is nothing more than a giant "what if" scenario. I refuse to accept this as canon since it would confuse everything that has been established in DBZ (Bardock MUST be the original Super Saiyan, but how was he born then yadda-yadda and etc). Simply put, F this movie. Good animation (with SSJ Bardock and Chilled being the highlights), but that is all..
3. Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return - Another useless and pointless movie that ultimately served no purpose. Tarble, Gure, and Aka (fusion of Abo and Cabo) were utterly unnecessary, and put no value in the entire collective of DBZ. The only cool thing was the fusion utilized to create Aka, but that was it. Seriously wished Gotenks killed him, instead of Goku defeating him and making them become good by giving them radishes.
4. Broly: Second Coming: You cannot believe my horror to witness the shitty sequel of my favored and original Broly movie. Everything about this movie had incredibly poor execution to it, and will do my best to convene that disappointment to you.
-No Piccolo or Vegeta at all in this movie. Their presence alone could have made this movie a thousand times better due to the enemy they are facing.
-Krillin being utterly pointless, despite wearing a badass Piccolo getup.
-Goten, Trunks, and Videl useless fighting against SSJ Broly. Felt like 100% filler that was ultimately useless. Plus Goten's whining kept on getting on my nerves.
-While cool that Gohan somehow managed to combat against SSJ Broly in his base form (while not training in 7 years), his beatdown against LSSJ Broly as a SSJ2 made no sense. I seriously wish Gohan managed to kill Broly by himself without Goten or Goku involved.
-Broly being 100% insane to the point he almost only says "Kakarot" while mistaking his sons for him. Such a shame for my favorite legendary saiyan.
-How Broly survived the destruction of New Planet Vegeta. He honestly should have just died.
-Shenron not appearing when Goten called on him to appear. WTH..
-No Gotenks, since he would have been a interesting opponent against Broly (despite the intended timeline not supporting my wish).
And Much more...
5. Bio-Broly - The ABSOLUTELY worst DBZ film of all time. As the second sequel to my beloved Broly film, I am almost ashamed to be a Broly fan after watching this crap. The storyline was complete shit that had a clone of Broly going crazy against the weaker members of the Z-Team, who eventually lost by freaking water folks. The only thing good was the animation and Bio-Broly fighting against Goten and Trunks, nothing else. I'll try to retain my composure while explaining why this movie was bad.
-How Maloja attained Broly's DNA and learned EVERYTHING about Broly's history to give to Dr. Collie and Jaguar is simply a bad fanfic gone viral.
-No Gohan, Piccolo, Vegeta, or Gotenks..nuff said
-The failed ending of seeing the REAL Broly being taken out by Goku and Pikkon in Hell. Would have been dope.
-Trunks knowing the Kamehameha.
-If I could rewrite this entire film, I would scratch it and replace it with the synopsis of Raging Blast 2. I would make Broly survive being blasted in the sun and achieve a massive zenkai, thus attaining LSSJ2 and LSSJ3. A few months after the heroes defeated Buu, Broly emerges from space and tries to kill everyone. It literally takes Ultimate Gohan, Piccolo, Gotenks, and Gogeta to kill him once and for all.
And that folks completes my ranking of the DBZ films. May do a list for DB and GT (and if Super ever releases one) one of these days too.
