If only Asura have someone to draw the background for him just like Toriyama had. I know Toriyama had help with the inking (that's why he made Super Saiyans have the hair they do-- to save his assistant time inking) but I never heard anything about people doing the backgrounds. When Toriyama explained his work process here he mentioned he did the backgrounds... thedaoofdragonball.com/blog/history/how-to-draw-with-akira-toriyama-manga-lesson-in-germany/I know he's drawn a lot of official art with background similar in quality to that of his manga: If he did get help from an assistant doing all those backgrounds, then I agree, Asura would probably benefit from such an assistant.

Today's DBS page is totally ugly. Trash, I would even say. Imagine this page would have been released like DBM. People would have trashed it, how terrible Toyotaro is and this whole manga isnt't worth reading with such terrible drawings. I mean the only redeeming aspects on this page is the Afro-Boxer. He looks ok, that's it.

DBZ page: "I will kill you all and savor every second!" DBM page: kills them all and savors every secondThat's almost some Wizard of Oz/Pink Floyd stuff right there I gotta give Toyotaro credit here: 17 has three very dynamic poses in this page, all drawn from some interesting angles. The best is probably the third, with him kicking the dude away. Toyotaro has a great understanding of anatomy and what a figure in motion should look like. 17's flowing hair and the ripples on his clothes really helps sell it. Also note how Toyotaro may actually be in the lead in terms of raw panel count, or will be-- I've read his Zamasu saga and his Moro saga and he almost always crams his pages with panels, with very few splashes IIRC. Compare with Toriyama, who's had a couple two-panelers so far. We know from experience Asura has a few splash pages (Hatchiyak, "farewell to the worthless", Ginyu busting out of Bra's explosion with punch prepped) and we can see here on the teleport page that he's okay with devoting a page to only a sparse amount of panels. Now the upside to this is Toyotaro often has a lot going on; he covers a lot of material during his chapters. The downside to this is stuff doesn't have much weight. If you look at today's pages you'll see both Toriyama and Toyotaro using the same radiating-lines technique to emphasize what's going on, but Frieza's scream has a lot more power to your eyes than 17's blows mainly because it's comparatively much bigger. Ironically my favorite panel of Toyotaro's is when the guy goes flying away with the little "zoom" because it's taking advantage of the panel's space (such as it is) to draw your eye and create a slight feeling of time passing. Lastly: my fingers ache just looking at all the spectators drawn in the stands of that first Asura panel. Man this stuff is fascinating. Thanks, Ax!

Toyataro might have more panels but he's told less story as far as I can see. Not shittin on the DBS page here but your comment Ashanark made me think about the progression so far and I reckon DBM has the lead on Super with DBZ trailing in third. DBM shows the control tower being destroyed, then who destroyed it. Next the minions flood the arena with the 2iC's announcing their intentions. DBZ is basically what you said, a splash page while Super has 17 throwing a right knee and a right kick, which is as awkward as it sounds. I still can't get over how much better Asura's work has looked so far. I know he's a fucking god but seeing this shit side by side just proves how fucking spoiled we are. I wish I could give him money. Not now coz I'm poor as atm but at some point. edit: nup this has irked me so I had to come back and look at the "dynamic" panels for 17. The action from the second to the third panel flows incorrectly. You could almost read this backwards for it to make more sense. Is 17 throwing a right punch, a right knee or a left elbow? His contorted as fuck pose in P2 is weird enough as it is but then add in him transitioning to his right fly kick in P3 and it is just bleh. Almost like there is a missing panel. Doesn't make sense to The Jim.

Look, I appreciate the build up to Freeza's smugness to his anger. But Can't this Toriyama guy speed it up a little?! And they say DBM is slow, then what do you call this?! And while DBS page has more panels, not a lot of progress happen in it.

Is it just me or are the pictures of DBM and DBS missing for the last two days? I only ever see DBZ, while you all are arguing about DBM and DBS

Have you tried clearing your cache? I'm also using chrome. But on my mobile atm. I didn't even see the place, where the pictures should be (normaly you see a little ripped paper icon if a picture can't be displayed). But now they're there so nvm.

So we've reached our first milestone, the end of a chapter! From now on, every time we have one of our categories finish a chapter, it will be noted as such. Today, DBM ends chapter 58!

DBM: I'm still in the dark whether this is Nedwook or Loopwhirl in the second panel. But overall, this is imo an overall good chapter cliffhanger. You introduced new plotpoints (remaining Majin fighters reveal themselves, Varga control tower is destroyed, Badidi's threatening statement) and end the chapter (and page) with a dark note.
DBZ: Is ... is there an error in the 2. panel? Vegeta put on some basic battle armor after the Ginyu fight, but on this page you can clearly see the RIT armor model (with the shoulder spikes). Oh, how embarrassing. I would have never noticed that if not for the one-page release shedule.
DBS: The focus on this fight gives almost the impression, this may be important in some way. Will it foreshadow C17 fighting style for another fight later, will this opponent have some impact for later fights, like his loss pumping up his comrades or him escaping C17 for a later confrontation? At the moment we don't know, but the one page release-shedule gives the impression C17 is not only one shoting those jabronis. (fun fact: Imo, the new characters Toyotaro is drawing, look much better than the established ones like C17)

On the subject of comparing "every page a cliffhanger"... so far I think DBS is doing the best here, if only because right now the action is so straightforward: 17 is beating up people who stand no chance against him. I guess it depends what you label a "cliffhanger." Frieza going "LET'S REFRESH YOUR MEMORY" as the page's final panel is kinda cliffhanger-y, since it delays figuring out just what it is he's doing until the next page. I don't think Sauza saying "You are all our prisoners" is cliffhanger-y, since it's not directly setting up any action next page. (The next page could continue with him, or it could jump to someone else... as indeed it did. In Frieza's case, the panel pretty much demands continuation; in Sauza's, it's more open-ended.) I think the assumption was if cliffhangers weren't intentional by the author, they'd only show up infrequently. Seems to be that way with Toyotaro. Toriyama's gotten a couple of them so far but he's releasing on a chapter-by-chapter basis so it brings up the question on if Toriyama himself is planning mini-cliffhangers to keep you flipping from page to page as you read the chapter. Hmmm... عمارWas doing a bit of research and found this: So for what it's worth, when Toriyama does do backgrounds, they're amazing. But you were also right: he did have a lot of help doing them. Well played.

This prelude to the Freeza fight is awfully long one page at a time... I could see people getting very frustrated. As to Super, I have no idea what's happening in that last panel.

Today, DBZ starts Chapter 295! In DBM...we have all the teleported people trying to figure out who dealt it without admitting they smelt it. In DBZ, Piccolo is feeling amazing and incredible. In DBS, Frieza sass-walks towards the camera.

Nail being impressed with Piccolo's power is pretty ridiculous from a power scaling perspective. Bringing up how much more powerful Piccolo will get from merging with Kami is good though. My guess based on this page would be that we'd get a cool fight with Piccolo, Vegeta, Gohan, and Krillin against Freeza, who we know can transform. A sort of 'group vs strong individual' fight. You'd assume this stuff with Piccolo is being done to build him up so he'll be useful in the fight. Cause this is a lot of buildup.
The Tournament of Power is really boring though. #18 vs some random, and she's not even doing anything interesting from a character or combat perspective.
DBM is definitely doing a strong mini-cliff hanger with that last panel. But the next panel is sorta funny iirc, so it's probably the best way to do that.
