I didn't know what else to call this. Essentially a discussion on the discord came up regarding the pacing of DBM, so as an experiment I've decided to do a comparison every few days (matching the release schedule of DBM) between DBM and DBZ, specifically the start of the Majin Rebellion and the fight with Frieza on Namek, as suggested by Ashanark . So what better way to start than by diving right in? EDIT: For the hell of it let's throw DBS in the blender as well! Starting right before the Tournament of Power kicks off! See you all in a few days!

This could be an excellent comparison. It may even answer whats longer- 5 minutes on Namek, 48 minutes in the T.O.P, or the approximately 20-25 minutes of the majin rebellion.

But you should at least keep the double pages as one. Since there are no double pages in DBM, it doesn't really matter. It's not like in One Peace, where there is every third page or so a double page.

Reckon most people would call the Super page filler if it was released like this. The Dragon Ball page is good because it seems like we're finally dealing with Freeza directly. His reveal reminds me a bit of Majin Bra's reveal.

DBM: Babidi executes his plan. The metal ring was set up on the previous page, now we see what happens. Only the tournament competitors vanish. DBZ: Vegeta's reaction makes finally sense. Freeza is standing menacing and watching over Vegeta and the rest. DBS: The intial Universe round-up culminates in a group shot of our heroes.
In DBM we see plot happening from one page to another. In DBZ you have a cliffhanger and only reaction shots in the next page. In DBS, just a goup shot, seems hella lot like fanservice,

It's kind of unfair to compare double pages from DBS to double pages from DBM. Even in DBM they are not released as two single pages. So I would also post the double page from DBS as just one page, not two. I don't think DBM needs an unfair advantage. Also, the DBS manga is not that bad. Give it a try, if you have time. It's still full of plotholes, but there are also many moments where minor characters can shine. Not many, though ...

DBM gives some exposition and it feels right in this page. The Panel composition looks uninspiring and plain though. Maybe on purpose to highlight the lack of dynamic and action in this scene, but focus on the dialogues and the reveal on the Majin Allies.
DBZ has a phenomenal wide shot portraying Freeza. It's focusing on him from a above shot on his back featuring Vegeta & Co on the ground. They are literally & metaphorically standing beneath Freeza. The symbolism in this is great.
DBS started the tournament and ... holy cow! Does Grand Priest do a Nazi salute? That panel depicted the worst possible angle for such a posture. The last panel looks weird as well how Goku's hair is cut. Even worse is the content, Goku is a freaking asshole in here. When he doesn't consider other people's opinion when he is alone, it's a roughly excusable thing. Goku isn't good to put himself in other people's shoes. BUT here, his son talks about teamwork and without commenting anything Goku ditches them like a freaking asshole. Yeah, I dislike Goku's character alot. I think I will cheer on his opponents in this arc.

Continuing with what iron leaf was saying, Frieza is now getting off his high horse and lowering himself to Vegeta's level to get his hands dirty. Very good symbolism here.

Toyotaro's paneling is strange. 17 zooming toward his opponents gets two large panels, but the actual action of him dodging and hitting--arguably the most important parts of the page-- are all crammed into the bottom third.
The single best panel so far goes to Toriyama, behind Frieza's back as he looks down at his enemies.
One area where Toriyama has consistently been a beast is his backgrounds: the environments he creates for his characters are always detailed, adding a lot of depth and texture even if there isn't any action going on. Compare his panels to Asura's and Toyotaro's and-- even if the figure-drawing is comparable-- Toriyama's often come off as easier to read because of the backgrounds.
For example: the middle page of Asura's, with the Majin spectators standing up-- it's very hard to distinguish at first glance what's going on. While the villains-- the focus of the panel-- are wearing dark clothes to make them stand out, there's still a ton of figures with white skin and white clothes against a white background. Compare the final panel of Toriyama's, which also has multiple characters viewed from a similar angle, but it's immediately discernible what's going on because of the detail on the ground.
Toyotaro's drawings seem very flat compared to Toriyama and Asura's. Compare the shot of 17 zooming toward the camera to King Piccolo walking out of his apartment. Piccolo isn't doing anything besides grinning, but he nevertheless has more weight to him than 17 in his dynamic pose.

One of the reasons I'm curious to see this comparison play out is to see how much Toriyama and Toyotaro's work does the "every page a cliffhanger" thing like DBM is known for. So far none of DBM's panels have been super cliffhangery by my reckoning, but we are still in the early stages of each of the three arcs. More drama will soon follow.
