It took a while but the dub's finally here! I know there's shit-ton of debate between dubs vs subs. I honestly don't mind watching either. But the Dragon ball is one of those series I can definitely prefer in English. I need my MANLY MEN DAMMIT! Anyway: I did like the whole "I gotta give training to protect you guys!" from Goku. Not sure if that's in the sub, but at least Goku CARES about his family/friends. Sean Schemmel nails as it as Goku, riding the line between goofy and serious perfectly. Alexis Tipton did a really good job at replicating Laura's voice. I'm still not sure why Laura isn't doing the dub, while still doing the Xenoverse games? But they definitely tried to stay consistent so overall plus. Everyone else is maintaining their characters from Z/Kai/Movies etc so I was perfectly fine with all of them except: 1) Goten. He sounded a bit weird compared to the original run of Z and the games. He sounds younger than he should be rather than older? Guess puberty is mixing up a little? 2) Chi Chi didn't sound the same as she did in BOGS etc. Other than that, decent dub job! Looking forward to Sabatmania next week

I've only seen the Toonami preview from the dubbed episodes, but one thing stuck out to me right away.
It was the line about Goku commenting on how strong Buu was, and that someone even stronger could come along some day, and that he had to keep training to protect everyone else. It's only slightly different in the original, where he says he needs to keep training to be "ready" because he couldn't defeat Buu on his own.
Automatically the dubbed version has Goku clinging on to the more "heroic" traits that he got adapted to from the original, where he was more about just wanting a good fight while being a good person. Not saying it's a bad thing though.

I'll be honest the only reason why I want this dubbed is so I can buy it on dvd and add it to the DB collection. :T

Not much except Sub vs Dub comparison cuz the content shouldn't differ.
1. I'm surprised they didn't dub the intro. 2. Like @thatguy said, good line kept in, Stubborn as Vegeta. 3. Chichi's voice... cold sore I can pass but good effect considering how many times she yelled at Goku. Edit: Maybe she spent the first recording session on the Roshi scene, hence all the other ones are "weaker?" 4. Satan's name... wait, they kept it in? Not Hercule? Awesome. 5. Awesome job Alexis Tipton for Trunks. (Something about Laura working on a different series/video game?) 6. Toilet water... nuff said. 7. Oh hey, no "Next time" to "ruin" the next episode. Cool.

Dub was on point for a lot of it. However, there are a few things I found....lacking. Goku's Heroic Trait -Nice to see return, but still completely pointless given what's going to happen down the road. Goku saying he wants to train so he can protect his family, while nice, conflicts with the rest of him. That said, I still prefer the FUNimation cast over the Japanese cast. While Masako will hold a place in a lot of people's hearts, I find a boyish voice coming out from adult men to be.....distracting. Sean does a great job as Goku and has shown with the experience he's grown, he is very comfortable in the role. Kyle Hebert returning as Gohan was a treat as I love his work and can hear him in any show or game he voices with ease, and seeing him portray a far more matured Gohan is a great way to develop the character. I was surprised when it wasn't Laura Bailey doing Trunks as Alexis Tipton was nearly pitch perfect to Laura as him. While I'll miss her, Alexis did a great job keeping in line with Laura's take, making the transition not as jarring compared to Stephanie to Colleen (still have a hard time watching Kai due to that), though Colleen has shown to play strong women extremely well (see FMA's Riza Hawkeye for proof). Next week is the episode I enjoyed thoroughly, and we get to see how Sabat does a pacified Vegeta outside of Battle of Gods (the scene where he embarrasses himself), and can't wait for the "THAT'S MY BULMA/WIFE!" line, though I still favor the Battle of Gods movie over the show, but I started watching Super at the start of the Future Trunks arc, so.....

I've been staying away from the subbed DBS episodes ever since I heard about the dub coming out (although I did see most of the Zamasu arc), and I've never watched any episodes before the Zamasu arc because I knew they were going to release a dub long before they announced it. So this episode was sort of my official introduction to DBS.
I liked the episode a lot, it was well written and a good continuation of the series. My biggest issue was Videl's personality change. I watched the new DBZ Kai Buu Saga episode that aired after it, and seeing her Super personality compared to her personality a few months ago makes me wonder if someone stole her body too. Really liked her original personality so I'm disappointed greatly in Super for basically erasing it and turning her into a girl stereotype.
Goku getting rich (I guess I should say ChiChi getting rich since he doesn't care about money anyway and she probably won't let him near it) was an interesting choice of plot for the first episode. I think him actually accepting a reward for saving the world all the time is a little silly but it's still a touching and nice way to start the new series.
Really wish Beerus and Whis had kept their voice actors from Xenoverse though, I don't like their replacements that much. But all in all looking forward to the next episode.

You still need money to buy groceries and such, and we all know Goku doesn't have a job. With his and Goten's appetites, it's a wonder they didn't go broke sooner. Bulma I get, Vegeta can train all day while she brings home the bacon. I wonder if Gohan is rich enough to feed himself and his own family now? I think he has the average saiyan appetite.

Don't forget baby Pan, just having a normal child must be expensive but a baby that can fly, throw heavy things and who knows what else while probably not knowing what she's doing would probably brake the bank a few times. I'm sure they have reserves thanks to Videl's dad plus if they need money either of the two can just enter a tournament and easily win money.

Oh yeah, forgot about Videl. She's bound to be loaded via Hercule.
Man, it would really suck if Goku or any of the other main (saiyan) cast didn't marry into rich families.

Wasn't the Son family broke by the end of Buu arc? I remember Chi-chi was so gun-ho on the boys entering the tournament because the family was running low on funds. This money was probably a godsend for Chi-chi.

Quoting because I agree with what you said on Masako and Colleen. Haven't watched the dub yet, but in my opinion any dub's #1 priority should be matching the voices to the characters. I fully understand casting Masako for Kid Goku because, well, you kinda need a woman to voice a kid. Giving a 10-year old an adult male voice would be poor dubbing. But they kept Masako on to voice adult Goku presumably to save the trouble of hiring a new voice actor for the (supposed) end of the anime and...it just kind of kept going. I'm sorry, but I have never been convinced by the "Goku is a childish person, therefore he should be voiced by an old woman even when he's a beefy 30-year old" argument. I'm sorry, but puberty actually is a thing in real life--not even TFS's MasakoX can avoid it entirely --and pretending it doesn't exist is refusing to match the voice to the character. For adult Goku, Sir Ian Corlett (original Ocean dub) and Sean Schemmel are where it's at. Other than Masako voicing adult Goku and Gohan, I approve of 99% of the Japanese dubs' decisions. (And she did do a great job for Goku Black, actually.) I think Collen's voice acting is generally good, it's just...when I heard her Gohan voice, I immediately thought "Huh, that's a talented woman trying to sound like a boy." Stephanie's Gohan sounds like a very raspy boy, but I can't tell it's a woman doing it. Same with Laura Bailey's Trunks. It sounds like an actual boy. christhesaiyanOne of my few pet peeves about Dragon Ball is how Toriyama keeps coming up with perfectly good female characters and then banishing them to obscurity :/ Videl was always a nice person, but she wasn't soft--at least, not for the first long while. I'm grateful DBM shows that she can still take care of herself.

Her portrayal as Goku Black was chilling and intimidating. It's just I find her as Goku and Gohan more distracting than anything. I understand they tried to find a male voice actor to play adult Goku but couldn't find one in time and stuck with Masako. While MasakoX gave Goku a slightly deeper voice, though still high pitched to keep in line with Goku childish enthusiasm, he as Gohan has shown maturity. Watch his Gohan in the Saiyan/Namek saga, then the Cell Saga and you can hear a subtle voice change. I'm not a "Dub only" person, there are some animes I can't watch in English (ex. Naruto due to his BELIEVE IT spam), but Dragon Ball is one of the few I can watch, esp. the more recent FUNimation animes as they try to make it as close to the source as they can get. With their work, I can watch it in English or Japanese and still understand what's going on, as I pointed out in my previous in this thread. I prefer hearing an adult male for Goku, but I also understand where people enjoy Masako's portayal. The country hick bit is played up more in Japan while it's more subdued in the US. Either way, both are great and Dragon Ball should continue.

Haven't watched this dubbed chapter yet, but I want to butt in and comment that MasakoX voice for Goku Black is at least as good as the japanese actress.
It sounds like if MasakoX was possessed by Takahata while recording that. They released a small TFS DBSA skit.

Episode 2: Just dub comparison, nothing new.
1. Is Vegeta's voice... sounding like a bit of a cold sore to anyone? His Kai/BoG voice is a bit... off this time around. 2. Hey so, Vegeta's line from Z... or kai(?), about Trunks hitting him just once and taking him to the park... was that a re-recorded line or was that directly from Kai? Anyone know? 3. Oh hey, Vegeta eating the Octopus' whole race... reference to his introduction anyone?

Oh hey, Vegeta eating the Octopus' whole race... reference to his introduction anyone? It's the Kai version, given how angry Vegeta sounds, but it has yet to air (as of this post). It's more or less meant to be a flashback for Super, though using it for Kai wouldn't surprise me since Super and Kai's English dubs were essentially recorded at the same time (which adds to some of the consistency). As for the episode itself, I saw it in Japanese and thought it was interesting. FUNimation's take is the same. Sabat as Vegeta is still his second best (Piccolo wins here), though him snarling and growling at the octopus inking him was wasn't as good compared to Japan, though Vegeta in the English dub is meant to be more serious and extremely intimidating. We do get to see the beginnings of the Prince Vegeta side of the character as he points out Trunks' shirt. All in all, good dub, though was confused why they have Laura Bailey listed as Trunks when it's Alexis Tipton. Minor nitpicks ultimately, but hearing Sean argue with himself once again is always a treat.

See how they have Erasa and Sharpner (as well as Trunks like you pointed out) there? That's beautiful, that is by far the greatest dub f*** up ever. XD

(Think Cooler saying "I fucking called it") Vegeta as the serious and intimidating... can't wait to see some of his gag moments and how Funimation would go about it: Keep with the original take or keep Vegeta serious, only "joking" in front of Beerus and nothing/no one else. Laura Bailey as Trunks and not Alexis Tipton... The Guys above me have a more hilarious reaction to that. (Looking at you That_Guy and your post about ToonamiAsia) Sean talking to himself is ALWAYS awesome!
