Hello everybody, today I will like to discuss with you on something that has been on my mind for some time now: What are the Grand Priest hidden motives?
To some of you, perhaps you think I am crazy since the Grand Priest is obviously good since he is a angel (they never do anything wrong, right?) who has loyally served Zeno (the amoral child ruler who has killed untold trillions of lives) who serves as "god" in this series (poor Akira). But I believe there is more than what meets the eye, and I will explain why he may be planning something behind the scenes.
Now as the latest episode has revealed, every single universe (besides 1, 5, 8, and 12) shall be destroyed including all inhabitants (and yes, even the destroyers and kaioshin) except for the angels when the tournament concludes besides the winner. Now why is that so? What makes the angels so special that they are exempt from being destroyed where everyone else is doomed to suffer complete annihilation (body and soul). So far the only thing we have gotten for this was from Whis who has said:
"Hohoho, my position is different from your's Beerus-sama".
Now while that vague comment can be interpreted in many different perspectives on trying to decode it's true message, nonetheless they receive special treatment while the others don't. Is it because the angels in general are probably the strongest entities in existence (only surpassed by Zeno himself), their assigned roles of caring for the hakaishin, or something else entirely different? Perhaps the Grand Priest persuaded Zeno (who looks easily persuadable IMO) to spare the angels while using his status as the strongest fighter in the multiverse (something Zeno obviously respects since he is moved by strength and martial arts) to help get his demands met.
Now while would the Grand Priest would go so far for his fellow angels?
Simple my friend, and that is because at least two of them (Whis and Vados) are his children, and while his parental skills and love are unknown, but it is highly suggested he cares for them since Whis highly respects his father to the brim. Perhaps All of the angels are his children, though this is unconfirmed though I have my suspicions. Other than that, perhaps he has a strong connection to his race, which suggests that most / all angels have a strong bond with each other for reasons left unclear.
But lets get back to the main question: What is the Grand Priest Motive?
To be frank, I believe that the Grand Priest wants to abolish / destroy both Zeno and Future Zeno in a coup once the Tournament of Power concludes.
"But why would he do that if he has been faithfully serving Zeno for probably hundreds of millions of years" you ask?
Here is my theory:
Even though it is true that all angels are shown to be remorseless to the billions of lives taken by their respective hakaishin, but a sense of trust and complacency are shown among the angels. Whis relationship with Vados and the Grand Priest are the two best prime examples. Most likely the Grand Priest is the same way, and was probably hurt when all of the angels from universes 13 to 18 were annihilated without a trace. If the Grand Priest is a lover of his kind as the latest episode has hinted at, perhaps he holds a deep grudge against Zeno for offing his kind (children?) while wishing to protect his other kin, but knows he is not strong enough to take him down. Thus he has forced himself to willingly serve him until three unique things has happened recently:
And those things are Goku, the Tournament of Power, and the Super Dragon Balls!
Thanks to Goku, another Zeno from the future has arrived who rivals his past counterpart in might. While this would be seen as the worst possible outcome for some cerebral individuals, the Grand Priest probably sees this as the best possible scenario that could play out because just as the saying goes, "fight fire with fire", so destroy the omni-king with another omni-king is simply ingenious in it's simplicity. With the only individual stronger than him gone from the world, the Grand Priest will become the "strongest" and will try to establish a supreme dynasty for his angels while serving as "emperor" or "god" for this new world. What he will do with the universes I cannot say, but he will have the means necessary to transform them in his ideal image all thanks to Son Goku who became the deep seeded obsession of Zamasu (who helped roll the current situation in it's present form). Why else would the Grand Priest be so interested in Universe 7 (*cough* Goku *cough*) when he brought his greatest weapon to end the current Zeno? As for Goku in general, thanks to Whis (inside information), God-Tube, or possibly the dragon balls (if necessary), the Grand Priest probably knows much about Goku to end him when the time comes. If the Grand Priest is trying to do what I think he is trying to accomplish, destroying Goku must happen since he is a miracle man who makes the impossible possible for his side of the war. Other than that, Goku's intervention in the godly business has brought many new wonders for the Grand Priest to utilize to his advantage.
As for the tournament, he will have all of his angels in one place, so with that he could use them to hold off the hakaishin, kaioshin, and mortal fighters (though the Grand Priest could probably take them all by himself simultaneously IMO) [and yes I had made the Grand Priest that powerful in my mind lol] as he enacts his plan to somehow have the two zeno's take down each other in a brilliant display of destruction. With them and everyone taken down, the Grand Priest could use his greatest prize for his benefit: the super dragon balls.
With a single wish from the powerful wish orbs, the Grand Priest could vastly improve his chances of becoming the next "omni-king". Perhaps he will wish to become the next literal omni-king? Perhaps he will wish to have all of his angels become "free" from being inert when a hakaishin dies (though speculative, perhaps the Grand Priest is connected to Zeno, so making this wish will save himself from being inert once Zeno dies)? Perhaps he will make a wish to "kill" both Zeno's if he cannot have them kill each other? Or perhaps simple immortality will suffice?
Whatever the wish may be, the Grand Priest will most likely use one wish that will increase his chances to destroy both zenos approximately at a higher percentage than his chances now concurrently. After all, ensuring the lives of his children [s?] while potentially creating a utopia for his kind is something I can see him do. Whether I am right or wrong, the upcoming episodes for the Universal Survival Arc shall be entertaining whether I am right or not!
I have another reason on why the Grand Priest might betray Zeno but keep this in mind: This scenario is 100% fan-made that might explain a potential coup orchestrated by the Grand Priest. Thus no available information from canon can support this theory, but I like it enough to add it in anyway.
Now the angel race as a whole is pretty mysterious (we know nothing about their aging, birth, reproduction (believed to be heterosexual since males and females are present), death (can they really die besides becoming inert when a destroyer dies?), or even their homeworld (location and the name along with the fauna and animals [for simplicity, let's call it Angel World]), etc). Going off by this, let's just assume again that all angels of the opposite gender mate with each other to produce offspring. With this, it is almost guaranteed that the Grand Priest has mated with a female angel twice to at least create vados and whis. Here is a concept pic of her from a artist on deviantart (called Dicasty):
And since the angels have so far shown that they care about their race very much, perhaps the Grand Priest became distraught when his mate / wife disappeared underneath unknown circumstances (thus explaining why she has not shown up yet in canon). Perhaps she has "died" / "been killed" from old age or from a raging zeno (was in one of the universes when Zeno blew up six of them)? Perhaps she has mangled in mortal affairs and somehow became corrupt from their sin, thus transforming into "fallen angel" (lose their halo, gain bat-like wings, evil ki, etc) before becoming a full-fledged demon (the first demon god ever because why not?)? If it was the first scenario, perhaps the Grand Priest wants to resurrect her to her original form along with his other destroyed kin while trying to defeat Zeno for preventing him from doing that an untold number of years ago. In the latter, perhaps the Grand Priest wishes to still get rid of Zeno so that he could use the super dragon balls unimpeded so that he could confront his wife and bring her back to his side (or even destroying her too for becoming defiled). Either way, this hypothetical situations could help explain why I get the feeling that the Grand Priest is doing something behind the shadows. Only time will tell though.
Final Thoughts
While it is true that much is not known about the Grand Priest (his entire history, true scope of his strength, his real name, etc), but no one can doubt he is a very important character despite his appearances being limited thus far. But being the personal subject of Zeno and the strongest (according to Whis) out of the top 5 most powerful in the entire multiverse makes this angelic man a person of great value. Whis, the strongest in universe 7, openly admits that the Grand Priest is vastly stronger than him (said by the same angel who can casually defeat Goku, Vegeta, and Beerus while manipulating time). His words must account for something, no?
But based on what we have seen, the death of his fellow six angels (children?), a potential wife, or natural fear of Zeno are reasons enough on why I can see the Grand Priest plotting to dethrone Zeno to establish a new era for his angelic kind. Hell, because of the simple presence of Future Zeno appearing and learning from a second hand source (hearing from Whis that the entire future timeline's multiverse was annihilated instantly), the Grand Priest probably believes it will be for the better if there was no Zeno to begin with. To prevent a death just like his future counterpart, the Grand Priest may act to destroy both omni-kings once and for all to ensure not only his survival, but his race and children's future as well.
Extra
To be honest, my distrust for the Grand Priest came about at the end of the Future Trunks saga when people were suspecting who hired Hit to kill Goku. Since some people (myself included) thought it was the Grand Priest who made the hire (his comment to Whis that Universe 7 was intriguing looked like great foreshadowing back then), but it turned out we were wrong. Nonetheless that impression of the Grand Priest being conniving stayed with me to this day! As Andres sees XXI as the "big bad" in DBM, I somewhat see the Grand Priest in the same light, though his reasons for doing his coup is justified.
Here are some pics that may help you change your mind that the Grand Priest is not benevolent and is trying to do something to change the fate of the multiverse forever:
Note: Ignore the side characters in pic two to get a "idea" of how strong the Grand Priest might actually be in DBS canon!
