"What if" the T.o.P. arc had different tournament condition?

The entire Battle Royale premise is just failing miserably. It's to the point that I'm hoping the manga does a full switcheroo when it comes time for the ToP. In the anime they had 1v1 matches in the preliminary match while the manga just had a GoD free-for-all. It'd be really neat if because the preliminaries turned out being a Battle Royale between the GoDs that Zen-Oh declared was overly messy and frustrating to watch that he decides to just watch smaller, more contained fights in the manga.
Sometimes they focus so much on one character for an episode or even a couple of episodes that it feels like they shifted the premise from battle royale.
I rarely had the feeling that there were in fact 80 participants on the ring. Sometimes somebody is commenting someone's fight. Yeah, like always. But nobody is actual helping each other in a fight. The only exception, when #17 helped Goku. In those moments I remember that this should in fact be a battle royale. This isn't the Cell games where it was a 1vs1 sudden death premise and the Z-fighter accepted it for some reason.
Here it's like everyone off-screen is just waiting for their time to get punched.
Normal "Budokai" tournament condition wouldn't be great with 80 participants. And the sudden death rule from the universe 6 tournament or the Uranai Baba tournament, the moment one fighter loses the next one is replacing him until only one universe have fighters left, could be possible. But I think the battle royale with different condition and competent writers, of course, could work anyway.
So, here my idea how they could change it in the manga or what if they had done it in the anime:
Making a battle royale with 10 rounds. In each round only one fighter from each universe is entering the ring (For example the picture: everyone from one distinct column). The winner/last man standing of each round gets 1 point for his/her universe. The universe with the most points after 10 rounds win the tournament. The universes themselves decide in which order their fighters will fight.
With competent writers/Toyotaro being clever, they could create good match up fights, making the first fights low tier and gradually raise the power level with each round. Creating a good plot with tension, so the last or last two rounds are the one deciding everything.
Variation A: The moment an universe is unable to win due to the lack of points they are getting erased. In the last rounds there are only few universes left, so the high tier fights are with less fighters.
Variation B: First at the end of the tournament every losing universe will be erased all at once. The losing universes blaming everything on the current winning universe/universe 7 and are only attacking the fighters from those universe as revenge.
They position "Hunger games" style on the ring and then start. They first stop when only one fighter is left. The older rules are still present, so no killing, no objects, no flying, only throwing out of the ring. Making it a battle royale with 8 people. If they double-ko or remis, they could split the points or make a rematch with just the remaining two fighters.
This concept has flaws as well. The longer I think the more I realize it. Nonetheless, This way they could focus on the low tier like Roshi, Tien, Krillin and throwing at them just other low tiers with special ability. Whereas, they could let the high tier like Vegeta and Goku fight opponents with high power level.
Furthermore, everyone could just comment the fights on the balcony and it wouldn't have any difference than commenting the fights in the ring but standing a few meters away and doing apparently nothing. Everyone could shine this way without losing focus on them because the plot need to be shifted towards someone else.
It could be even very tactical when the losing universes ally for one round just to eliminate the U7 fighter or the current winning universe.
What do you guys think?
