And there it is, DBS not being the worst page. The end is nigh!
Literally nothing has happened in DB so far and when it does it's gonna be pages of Freeza tranforming. wew
Asura deadset spoils us. It's enough to make a grown man unzip.

You know... looking from the outside of my transformation, It Looks really painful, but it ain’t that bad.
As For Dbs, In that 5th panel, Basil”s Face is kinda of creepy...
For Dbm, I’ll say it again, great job by Asura, BRAVO! I really looked forward to seeing that Gohan Vs. Cell fight, can’t wait to see more.

I'm utterly stunned with how quick Freeza's powerup was.
I dunno how to explain it but the way Super almost always has to have those diagonal panels seems.......tacky? Amateurish? Tryhardish? Dunno, but it is way too overused. When a single panel page from 30yrs ago and a web comic some french bloke doodles in his spare time not only consistently look better but draw more excitement I think it's pretty sad. Sad in that this is [current year] canon. Shame.

Sad in that this is [current year] canon. Shame. I'm not a fan of the diagonals either. I feel like its a side-effect of Toyotaro trying to cram in as much as he possibly can on top of his chapters being longer as it already is. Sometimes less is more, and I think this is something best exemplified with DBZ's one page shot of Frieza and to a slightly lesser degree with DBM's fight on this page. I feel like if Toriyama had drawn DBS he'd have halved the number of panels and still have conveyed just as much. Frieza just radiates power and there's nothing distracting from it at all. Even though by power level it has the weakest character (losing to Cooler/Piccolo/etc) he's easily more imposing than anything DBM and DBS have to offer in our triple comparison today. Likewise DBM's fights feel like they have more impact behind their punches/kicks even though the number of actions on DBM and DBS are about the same.

Funny how these things sync up sometimes. Last few DBM and DBS pages had Gohan shine (though Gohan vs. Cell is waaaaay more hype), and now both transition to Piccolo. Both DBZ and DBM have Frieza transforming or about to transform. The DBM pages where Gohan communicated with Gohan recycled a lot of panels. Granted, many of them were showing how slowly time was passing relative to Gohan, or to reflect how similar the two Gohans were, but that's still cutting corners... Another thing to compare: dialogue to action ratios. DBZ has been almost entirely dialogue or buildup, with Frieza's transformation. DBS, on the other hand, has been almost entirely action, with most of its dialogue inconsequential (along the lines of "Arrr, I'm gonna beat you!"). I give DBM the win in dialogue here. The moment where Gohan realizes his alternate counterpart thinks exactly the same as he does and so they can work in unison/count on each other is a highly unique idea, at least where DB is concerned. DBS pits our heroes against a bunch of fodder, who we've never seen before and don't know anything about. So why does that make me snore while I enjoy watching the contestants fight the WTO mooks in DBM? I guess it's because we expect the heroes to win, so they're not really being brave or tested going up against random opponents. But with the contestants, there's much more suspense (who lives? who dies? what does it look like?) and you kinda admire them more for trying. I had this whole paragraph written about how choppy DBS's fight choreography was, but-- while I still think it has some merit, seeing how in today's page Piccolo goes from blocking to both him and the rock dude standing solidly like nothing had even happened yet-- I realized this was mainly because we skipped a page: "So teamwork's their gimmick? What a pain." facepalm Truly, an apt summation of DBS, and DB in general. Also really ironic considering why we chose the three starting points we chose. That explains why Gohan goes from about to kick Bergamo in the face to standing up blocking hits. Still, that Friday page of Gohan fighting is confusing. He gets hit from behind, but appears to fly up (that diagonal paneling again!), doing a handspring off thin air, then getting attacked and ending up on the ground again. Toyotaro has dynamic poses and camera angles but his action is frequently less intuitive than Asura and Toriyama's. For example, look at the DBZ panel where Frieza throws his head back. There are no action lines drawn in there but I can still see what happened, and get a gist of how forceful the motion is for Frieza. Toyotaro's best panel is probably that last one where you can see the giant guy chasing Piccolo in the background. The amount of detail Asura puts into his panels is staggering. Whether it's spectators or a panel full of WTO guys, if he's afraid of drawing crowds, you sure can't tell. Finally, as Ax pointed out, that splash page of 2nd form Frieza is a great example of why splash pages can be a good thing. Viewing this story all in one go, it slows down the reader and gives the moment weight.

It all just blends together.

DBM begins Chapter 60!Over in DBZ-land, I like that Frieza brags about his new power level, Vegeta just barely has time to process what Frieza just said, and then Frieza immediately attacks. Meanwhile Tien is looking completely useless in DBS. MAJOR EDIT:Due to overwhelming demand, the next post will skip the entire special and jump straight back to the main DBM chapter. However, to meet the original intentions of the thread as I devised it, here's where DBZ and DBS would be had we continued for the entire release of the special day by day, 22 pages later! DBZ: In DBZ Frieza has stabbed Krillin, Gohan subsequently went berserk on him, and Frieza raised his power level even higher as Piccolo flies closer to the battle while Goku watches from his healing tank. DBS: In DBS, Tien has been eliminated by Frost. Frieza then convinces Frost to take turns with him in going all-out while the other rests, and Frost eliminates most of U9 as a result. The 22 pages ends with Frieza betraying Frost.

Oi, I thought the whole point of this thread was to compare the pacing of the actual stories, not the special chapters? No no, I'm with Jim here. I thought DBM was special chapters excluded so we could see how the actual story felt compared to DBZ/DBS. Please, Ax? Pretty please? Also: Tien is like, the first guy in DBS to actually attempt any teamwork. And he's probably the next guy to get eliminated. Frieza's attack this next page is one of the simplest in all DB but it's one of the coolest. Just raise his hand, and boom.

The pace of the specials can be quite troublesome at times, since most of the time it's really long sagas condensed in a single chapter.
