Damn we ran out of base colors indeed. How about SSJ purple or SSJ brown? SSJ God was sorta reddish magenta and Oozaru had brown fur. I'm not sure if he would use brown for a SSJ form unless it's supposed to be an alternate SSJ Oozaru hybrid from SSJ4. |

This mastered UI design was so bad it got my attention and I actually started paying attention to DBS again. Now I suppose I'll have to catch up, since the last time I saw DBS Vegeta just unlocked a new form. But yeah that design is awful. Worse still is the fact that Toriyama's drawing of it is literally the exact same one as his SSG, just with the hair colored white and slightly different eyes. No really, it's the same one.  I now look forward to seeing how Goku bullshits his way to this mastered form in the span of what I'm sure will be two minutes. After I catch up of course. |

Part 1: The heroes are helpless against Jiren. Vegeta unlocks a new form. They are still helpless against Jiren. Part 2: Toppo is starting to have it really bad against A17 and Golden Freeza. Toppo also gets new form and not only that but also somehow becomes a "GOD OF DESTRUCTION". Not gonna lie, this is pretty impressive, but ultimately useless anyway. You will know when you see it. A17 and Golden Freeza then proceed to get almost Hakai'd and start running away like cockroaches being stomped all around the almost entirely broken arena. Freeza is almost eliminated and left unconsciuous, saved by A17 Part 3: Vegeta and Goku are somehow starting to make Jiren get sweaty and angry somehow, despite they were unable to do so before. Freeza (he was knocked out but woke up) and A17 keep getting chased away by Toppo, so A17 just starts making rocks fall to him. Suddenly, Vegeta and Goku and Jiren are fighting so fucking hard an entire shockwave actually manages to hit all Toppo, A17 and Freeza. Jiren suddenly, at random, decides to shoot a stray blast at A17 and Freeza. This apparently takes them out of charge. Part 4: Jiren flies away from Goku and Vegeta. He and Hakai Toppo look at each other as if they just were realizing a masterplan to finally win, but all they do is just switch to Toppo vs. Vegeta and Jiren vs. Goku (offscreen, somehow managing to keep up with him despite BLUER VEGETA and him together could not do shit) while A17 and Freeza are nowhere to be seen (Freeza is probably knocked out again but still inbounds). Part 5: Vegeta proceeds to constantly kick the shit out of Toppo after a previous episode of him looking even stronger than Jiren. Toppo is eliminated. A17 finally appears (a bit hurt). Freeza is nowhere to be seen. Jiren throws a very edgy speech where he smiles from the first time and calls Toppo and his other team-mates "pathetic". Not that he's wrong though. He finally powers up. Part 6: The now remaining trio tag team him and they get their ass kicked (Jiren arguably is closer to his max power now). But out of all people, A17 manages to deal the first damage ever on Jiren. Not only physical but emotional as well. They get their ass kicked again and are about to get knocked out. Golden Freeza appears really angry but gets one-punched. He is nowhere to be seen again yet not eliminated. Jiren is finally really fucking mad at A17 so he makes a really large KI blast. A17 sacrifices himself and dies to save them. |

1. Super Saiyan God
2. Saiyan Beyond God
3. Super Saiyan Blue
4. Super Saiyan Blue (Kaioken)
5. Super Saiyan Blue (Mastered)/ Switch between Super Saiyan God
6. Ultra Instinct
This is just insane. At least in GT Goku only really gains three new forms (child, golden oozaru, and SSJ4), and only one has true evenly balanced gains. Honestly Goku is literally missing Super Saiyan Rage, Rose, Vegeta's new form, and Kale's Super Saiyan Berserk to have the entire SSJ tree underneath his belt. Unbelievable....

If anything the regular ultra instinct form would have sufficed in my eyes. This poses the problem DBSuper has suffered since the beginning. Spamming out transformation just for the sake of it. When facing this criticism one may say "b..but Vegeta and Goten/trunks made it less legendary!" Yeah, but it was the same form, and it required specific conditions for Gohan to initially pass it, same for Goku and Vegeta. Nonwithstanding about SSJ3 which despite being more solid (and also required very specific conditions/high power level) it also started to show the worrisome tendency Super solidified. It's a shame man, because I think an all white/silver goku looks truly godly and intimidating. But at this time, after many transformation burn-outs, all poorly explained, all random and with little significance... we are fatigued. It just does not have impact anymore. If this was only SSJblue and this ultra instinct form, it would have been cleaner and stood out more. SSJred SSJblue SSJrose (in reality a variation of SSJBlue with some odd circumstances, never truly explained) Rage Trunks (this was total bullshit even if it made Trunks sorta relevant) SSJgreen(berserk) SSJbluer (this one was so lazy it was not even a true recolor) SSJblack (Ultra instinct, also really wonky explanation, is it a technique or what? is it a form only goku can have?) SSJwhite (apparently like the previous but better. would Beerus turn white too when using maximum ultra-instinct?) Fucking eight transformations man, and I'm not even counting Toppo's and Freeza's bullshit forms either. Also, I did not include this "saiyan beyond god" bullshit either. Can you name anything truly memorable of them like all the implications that SSJ1 and SSJ2 initially had? This amounts to double the transformations of DBZ and DBGT combined if you exclude Ozaru. |

Under different circumstances I would hug the regular UI form with open arms...but the way it was achieved makes no sense and the way it's been used reeks of asspullery and zero foreshadowing. UI was mentioned a couple of times...BACK IN RoF! Since then I can't recall a single instance where the subject was even brought up. The manga is a bit better in that Beerus uses partial Ultra Instinct when he fought all the other GoDs, but he doesn't have a radical new form when he uses it. Imagine if Vegeta brought up the legend of the Super Saiyan back when the Ginyu Force arrived... and then nothing Super Saiyan related at all happened until the Buu Saga when Goku decides to hold off Majin Buu before he returns to the Other World and suddenly his hair turns blond and his eyes go blue after Buu punches him one too many times and he's getting overwhelmed. That's what's happening with UI. Frieza Saga - Vegeta doesn't shut up about the Legendary Super Saiyan and Goku finally attains the state in a moment of intense personal rage and radical power growth. Android/Cell Saga - SS1 is revealed to not be enough anymore so all the various Super Saiyans try and attain "the next level", ultimately resulting in SS2 and various subgroups of SS1. Buu Saga - SS3 came out of nowhere, but at least had the justification of Goku training for 7 years in the Other World to discover the form. We do not speak of Gotenks. DBGT - Even GT didn't have SS4 pop up out of absolutely nowhere, since growing back Goku's tail in a bid for him to gain energy was a deliberate plan by the Old Kai, resulting in Golden Oozaru (Oozaru + SS1) and then finally SS4. Super? Super's all over the place with transformations with one common trait--they appear out of nowhere. SSG was a random magical ritual discovered at the last second because they called Shenron and had him explain how to do it at the last second and it was remarkably easy to do. SSB was learned offscreen. Golden Frieza was likewise learned offscreen and in an insultingly low 4 month turnaround time. Goku using Kaioken + SSB against Hit was also likewise out of nowhere. Super Saiyan Rage Trunks also came out of nowhere and has zero explanation. Super Saiyan Rose happens out of nowhere in both anime and manga. He just learns it out of nowhere. Goku's Mastered SSB in the manga was also out of nowhere. Goku just has it suddenly and then he's using the HAKAI which he's never seen. Kale's Berserker form is different for no discernible reason from all the other Saiyans beyond Broly fanservice. Ultra Instinct came out of nowhere. It was alluded to a couple of time in RoF and then suddenly appears after Goku is teleported to some random dimension by an imploding Spirit Bomb that he was stronger than. Vegeta's Super Saiyan Bluer likewise just...happens. Toppo's GoD form also just happens. He says it's time to cast aside justice...then holds onto it for 30 episodes until it's time to cast aside justice. Mastered Ultra Instinct will likewise happen in the span of literally two minutes. EDIT: Added in a couple more. |

All of those transformations cannot hold a candle to the classics Conqueror Geng . None are memorable far as I am concerned. Even SSJ3 has more meaning than all of these forms combined. That my favorite form but it true that the trend with useless SSJ forms did started with SSJ3 (though SSJ4 is exempt). SSJ God is a boring transformation where anyone can achieve it if enough saiyans are around. Want more power than the legendary SSJ that takes a thousand years to manifest? All you need is six friends and pour your friendship together. Hooray! SSJ Blue is just that, a blue recoloring that has massive internal problems in all continuities. Rage is THE worst form of all time, more so than Golden Frieza in both attainment, power scaling, and usage. Rose just another version of Blue, and Ultra Instinct just happens out of the blue. All of them lack tension, and simply just appear for the sake of it. Hell the worst fanfic writers under the age of 13 have better guidelines than Super. At least they don't give out massive recolored transformation to the same character six times over. And if they did, they at least cancelled their series in like four chapters amounting to 1,500 words. Super however has plagued us since 2015 every week with this nonsense. I am at my wits end man. Both Toei and Akira Toriyama are pathetic in this regard. What happened to them I cannot say. |

One thing that also bothered me is that none whatsoever caught up to these new transformations within traditional routes (as in for reaching SSJBlue you need SSJRed, etc). Fuck, not even the old ones. We never saw Goten or Trunks reach SSJ2. Or anyone reach SSJ3 for the same effect.
Another thing I forgot to mention (probably because I already got used to it being the norm in super) is that Vegeta went from fucking SSJ2 (for some reason stronger than SSJ3 when butt angered) to SSJBlue, skipping SSJ3 and SSJgod altogether (not in the manga but this is a separate issue. it still did nothing to explain how he got it, but at least it shows he did not skip that many forms) to being Goku's equal again. This is a big asspull no one talks about. Vegeta magically had SSJblue by the time SSJgod felt in disuse. This is like Raditz appearing in Cell saga and suddenly went SSJ2 without even having SSJ first.
Then enter bullshit unique transformations: Trunks bypassed the same two stages Vegeta did. And Black went from being SSJ2 level on base to skipping the entire pantheon of forms as well (in the manga it made a lot more sense).
Kale is also bullshit (unlike Broly in DBM) because no lore regarding it was explained with it. We just saw the Broly similarity and loosely connected the dots. Not to mention her instant power-creep was stratospherically larger than Broly, nor the conditions of her invincibility (if any) were fully explained. As it was it's just a bullshit green transformation that puts her in SSJblue level (or close enough to walk through a Kamehameha) but doesn't make her invincible since Jiren just slapped her around and made her untransform.

Goten and Trunks stopped making progress because they stopped being relevant as characters the instant they were no longer needed for Super Buu. They haven't recovered since. No one really talks about it because SSB is a form that doesn't accomplish much at all and is overshadowed by the even bigger asspulls of Golden Frieza, Super Saiyan Rose and Rage Trunks. SSB's only noteworthy accomplishment is overwhelming Hit to an embarassing degree, but only in the manga. After that it's already getting discarded for either the anime's SSB2 Vegeta, Goku's SSBKK, or the manga's MSSB, which in turn will get discarded by UI. NOTHING about Black made sense. Let's use the manga's version as an example. - SS2 Trunks is close to if not on par with SS3 Goku. At the very least Goku got all fightlusted and went SSG on him because Trunks was that damn strong as a SS2. - Base Black > SS2 Trunks - SS2 Vegeta > SS2 Black. With power scaling from the above examples it means SS2 Vegeta > SS2 Black > Black > SS2 Trunks = SS3 Goku? Say what? By this logic Vegeta must be MASSIVELY stronger than Goku at this point in time. Goku wasn't holding back as a SS3 and Vegeta himself confirms how close the two were in power. Then suddenly Black gets a zenkai and SS2 Black is dunking on SSB Vegeta. Then he learns Rose out of nowhere and thrashes SSB Vegeta even harder. That one image I saw floating around actually made me feel better about that issue. Goku was just holding back against Kale.  |

The body slimming down over bulking up fits with Toriyama's style and was a good throwback to his original work in a less blatant rehash. I know people didn't like the red coloring since it reminded them of Kaioken, but I can see the reasoning for choosing a new color to make SSG stand out. The flame like aura and red coloring does feel like wild and war like, which is how most people would describe a Saiyan god should be. That could have probably been the mascot form of Super than SSB. Even if the blue forms were meant to sell merchandise that could have still been done by selling SSG Vegeta in the debut movie. One new form that just gets buffed up with training isn't so bad. Goku Black having a different color wasn't so bad. The differing color could be taken to indicate the corrupted ki/god ki from his own actions. I dig that excuse for adding a different color to make him stand out. |
