I would hope that the manga would buff some of these characters up to make these battles more entertaining, by either making more fighters from the other universes closer to the top tier fighters in U7 or give them better techniques to make up for the power difference. This would have been the arc to try to revive technique, skill, and strategy. I'm reminded of Yu Yu Hakusho. Right after the Dark Tournament arc they introduced human enemies who while not as strong as the protagonists in raw power their abilities allowed them to challenge them or counter them in interesting ways. What if we had an opponent who could absorb kinetic energy and repel it back at someone? That ability alone would counter someone like Goku even in SSG punch and throw that force right back at him. What about an opponent that could manipulate space and time to displace an attack from hitting them to hitting their opponent? There could be an opponent who uses telepathic attacks? There were a number of ways that some characters in other universes could have made up for lack of power to fight stronger fighters. If teamwork is thrown into the mix a lot of mundane or simple techniques coming together could create some serious trouble. It is not usually Toriyama's style, but since this tournament was suppose to showcase power just wasn't important it would have served him or Toyotaro to have gotten notes from a friend or other manga artists that are use to creating diverse abilities to help them create foes who while physically weaker are just as dangerous due to their abilities and techniques. The teams could be mixed with traditionally strong foes and skilled and unique foes. It would go a long way into reminding us that Goku and Vegeta are crafty fighters as well as strong ones, but testing their smarts on how well they adapt. Smarter fighters like Gohan or Piccolo could really shine in that arena. The weaker Z-fighters could have been a lot of help against trickier opponents. And get away from the classic PUNCH THEM REALLY REALLY HARD and if that fails BLAST THEM REALLY REALLY HARD aesthetic? I feel you give DBS too much credit, though I do admit I'd like to see it move away from that. I'd be surprised if we got something better than what the anime gave us with Roshi, the only character who actually showcased skill defeating power in the anime's version. Don't get me wrong. I have no illusions that anything I suggested will be implemented in the manga. That was more of me voicing what I would have liked to have seen done or brainstorming how with a bit more imagination new techniques and abilities that could help people with less raw power could potentially match up with power houses like Vegeta or Goku. If Toyotaro had gone full divergent universe with his manga by having a new roaster for U7 team I could have hope, but he is sticking to what the anime did. Toyotaro is probably worse with diverse techniques than Toei is. In his Universe 6 Tournament arc he had Hit's technique less effective on people stronger than him. Like I said before I really only think Universes, 6, 7, and 11 will be the focus and the rest will be fodder. Although, I have to hand it to Toriyama's outlines, it gives people more material for fan fiction. I look forward to the fan or fans that will eventually make a good rewrite fan fiction of Dragon Ball Super. There are enough ideas in this series that if tweaked and retooled can make a good or great series. Tournament of Power arc with entirely new characters, reworked abilities, techniques, and team strategies could make a good story arc.

Just read the latest chapter of the manga and like the anime it starting strong. Everyone showing up and doing short introductions with U6, U7, and U11. I liked Hit's line of how he's waiting to face Goku again. Maybe they'll actually do it this time, instead of just hinting at it in the anime. Cause I don't think that filler arc of Hit going to U7 to kill Goku is canon to the manga. Granted when they revealed Jiren, I was actually hoping that this: was how the ending of the tournament would play out. I also found it strange how Kale seems to be even more of a background character. Perhaps they're just waiting till she Broly's out before she's seen more in the manga. I'm just hoping she and Caulifa don't master Super Saiyan One, Two, Berserker, and weird controlled Berserker form in this tournament. But, with Super being such a letdown I wouldn't be surprised. Frieza and Frost's interaction were about the same in the anime. Only difference is Frieza just told Frost to go after the Humans early on. I liked how 18 caught Ribrianne's attention when she told her two opponents she was married. HOPEFULLY we don't get as much as an earful about the wonders of anime's bullshit idea about 'love' I mean love as we did in the anime. Either way the manga like the anime started out as a battle royale and hopefully it stays that way when fem Broly I mean Kale loses it for whatever reason.

Key Points - Jiren introducing himself to Goku, he appears reluctant and looks like he only said "be gone" (get lost in the anime) because he didn't want to get too attached to Goku. (Looks down while he said this, hence my thought of reluctance.) - 17 is the MVP RIGHT OFF THE BAT... taking out most of the U10 fodder and one of the fliers. - Contestants are fighting each other rather than just Universe 7, but Vegeta's the weird one joining into an existing fight. This might be the reason the Anime had everyone " target" U7 when in actuality it had scenes like the "MODE CHANGE" guy and that other U4 dude fight Vegeta at the same time, and most of the pride troopers taking on Goku (but not an immediate elimination). - Frost targeting the humans? Now in the anime it was just Krillin. So far it looks like Frieza is just a skin-flute rather than Hype Bait. And this is just too epic to pass up. Edit: This is frikking epic, this better be in color in the DBZ/Super Fanart someday.

That being said, I don't hold out much hope for Hit having a fair shot at Goku at all. In the manga he's pathetically weak compared to Goku, able to push himself up to SSG Goku levels for only a mere minute, to say nothing of SSB Goku. Since then Goku has only added Mastered SSB (somehow) and a HAKAI to his arsenal (somehow), enough to put him on Merged Zamasu's level singlehandedly. If a Goku vs Hit rematch does occur, it'll only be because Goku holds himself back, which, hilariously enough, is something Goku does for most of the tournament anyway in the anime, so who knows? Hit: "Behold Goku! I can now push myself up to your SSB level for FIVE MINUTES! THIS IS THE STANCE!" Goku: "Oh that's cool. Look at what I can do now too." *Goes Mastered SSB*Hit: "B-but, muh progress..." Piccolo: "There there, it's okay. We all get there at some point. Right Vegeta?" Vegeta: "FUCK OFF"

Vegeta: "FUCK OFF" To be honest everyone is kinda weaker in the manga. Even Goku and Vegeta. But Hit is so hilariously weak it hurts. He's the only thing the anime has done better consistently. To be honest his filler arc was one of the highlights of DBSuper. There is no Kaioken on manga. There likely won't be a Bluer Vegeta or Hakai Toppo either. Trunks also had no bullshit transformations and Kaulifla does not have SSJ2 (it is not so clear if she has SSJ either).

Also, Goku knows Hakai. This show us Manga Toppo can do Hakai stuff with God Ki only and no transformations. Toppo, as opposed to the trend of making everyone weaker in manga, is actually more competent than the anime's "base", so there's really no need to boost him that much. He also is not a "JUSTICE" caricature and is more pragmatic and understanding, so there will be no "throwing ideals away" moment to trigger the transformation. I think it won't be there just like deformed Zamasu wasn't, and like BS Rage Trunks wasn't either. GoD Toppo seems to follow the trend of bullshit transformations that will be discarded.

Me neither, I just hope for it not happening (as I found it very pointless and contrived, in the manga it would be doubly so due to the things I mentioned before). There's a long way before we get to that point. And I am not sure about the other thing. Though on retrospective Goku Black saga was short in the manga, at the time it was released it felt like a lot longer than the anime.

Now, compare the team presentation from the manga and the anime. Back then, I was really underwhelmed how dorky all U7 members looked like in the anime. The manga counterpart looks really amazing. Just look at the father-son matching clothes. In the manga version it is much better. And ... OMFG .... What happened to Krillin & Roshi alltogether? They shrink more and more when time flies. C17 is standing behind Krillin and he's just reaching up to his crotch. Goku is standing before him and Krillin just reach to his crotch. Krillin is a dwarf just in case all the people not watching TFS's DBZA didn't pick that up. Let us forget that Krillin actually always reached everybodys chest at least and sometimes the shoulders. Turning him into a Benjamin Button where he literally shrinks while the series progress is just ridiculous. Is anybody here as well upset about the fact that Krillin "looks" like he would be C18's child rather than her husband? And now Roshi. What the hell are they doing with Roshi's height? He was never really depicted as small. Definitely not in a dwarf way of thinking. Vegeta is the walking, talking "little man Syndrome" in DB and even he is almost double the height of Roshi, WTF! And in this case, there aren't any optic illusions. Just plain portraying 2 character as dwarfs. This is all false-memory syndrome. (sarcasm turned on) You guys remember Goku from Dragonball, he always acted like a retard, haha, that was funny. You know in DBS, let's be true to his characterization and leave him be a retard. It's not like he "ever" acted mature or intelligent or responsible or like an adult at all. No, he definitely never acted like that. Hahaha, Yamcha is the all time loser in DB, hahaha. Remember how he never accomplished anything in DB. Guess we depict Yamcha as a all time loser as well. And don't forget Krillin. He is in fact a dwarf in DB, let's depict him as an even smaller dwarf in DBS, oh, you know what, let's turn Roshi into a dwarf as well. (at least Vegeta's hair is not so short as in the DBS anime) Mhm, most of it looks cool though. And Goku doesn't look like a goof for once.

Has the Super manga ever been consistent with size? I feel like this isn't the first time they've varied in size. Krillin I know usually varies in size in the anime. I'm not going to dig into my manga to see how consistent Krillin's size is in the original manga. It feels like one of those things that depends on the artist and how much effort they are willing to put into scale or size. I agree Krillin is not usually that short. It is probably more to do with Toyatoro just remembering Krillin is short and had him not reaching waists to emphasize that and still showing off 17 rather than him caring about actual height. At this point I've sort of stopped caring about Toriyama, Toei, or even Toyotaro caring about those little details. After all Trunks and Goten should be in their teens by now, yet they are still drawn like they are 7 and 8 respectively. It is what it is.

I don't know if I should be pleased or pissed because some of the fighters got out VERY early. - Krillin didn't even throw a punch - Tien didn't even damage his opponent - Dr. Rota is confirmed to have magical spell casting abilities... but he still didn't have time to use them. Go figure.
- Universe 9 gets taken out first as planned but instead Goku and Vegeta, Frost plays a bigger role! Notably the Trio de Danger. I guess it's because of the exhibition match they wanted to fight Goku specifically, but here it's different! Up against Gohan and Piccolo! (Gohan doing handstand combat? I wanna see more of that in DB tbh!) - Gohan's save is a nice callback to DB Goku from the freefall match with Tien.
- Frost is an idiot for willing to use up all his stamina? What if it was someone else who knocked Frost out and not Frieza? It's still a stupid thing to use up all your energy from the get go. I still prefer Frost using up his energy (not quickly in my taste) than using the Buff Form and falling for Frieza's trap. - Frieza is more direct, willing to sacrifice two of his teammates to eliminate the Frost copycat (anime was implied one with Krillin) - Frieza still hints to "dealing with the Saiyans" so I'm not sure if the Manga is gonna show him successfully betraying U7 or if it was just a tease to Gohan. - Bergamo before his defeat actually looks like he was willing to team up with Piccolo. At least, my interpretation of the scene.

The inevitable rivalry between the DBS anime and the manga will be interesting to watch play out in a year or so when this thing finally finishes. So far, I haven't particularly liked either version's ToP. Gohan gets a token victory for teamwork by saving Piccolo, but his response to the Trio de Dangers working together to fight him is "Ugh, teamwork is so annoying"...which pretty much sums up all DBZ. Frost seems much more gullible here, but Frieza's straightforwardness about the whole situation is very refreshing--he only gets to kill the Saiyans if he wins, and backstabbing them here means he likely won't win, so for the time being he is fully dedicated to playing his part in U7's team. Really ironic.
I also like how Bergamo asked Piccolo for help. Ever since the exhibition match in the anime I thought there was a major dissonance between how I think I was supposed to feel about Bergamo and how I actually felt about Bergamo. He's a great example of Unintentionally Sympathetic. In the exhibition match he begged Xeno to call off the ToP and spare everyone, and surprisingly Xeno agreed, in effect making Bergamo a multiversal hero since he would've saved everyone had he won. Certainly a better hero than Goku, who didn't even try to change Xeno's mind. Here again in the manga we have Bergamo bringing up the bigger problem of universal erasure and trying to find a way to prevent it (granted, he may not have been entirely sincere this time since Piccolo was about to eliminate him.) The point is, Bergamo's design and the overall crappiness of his native universe makes me assume he's meant to be villainous, but in reality the guy is lowkey one of the most selfless characters of the franchise.
Also, U9 Stoner Angel was sad when his universe got erased. I guess his smirk in the anime was just Toei hyping up nothing as usual.

Once again the manga and anime are similar yet different, and once again the manga has done some things better than the anime and some things worse than the anime. On the one hand, I like that the manga's pacing is sped up a bit. On the other hand, I feel like at times it's sped up a little too much (in stark contrast to the previous arc, where the Zamasu crap lasted way too long). It's like the anime and manga are each going to different extremes instead of just meeting in a happy middle somewhere. The manga also has a better "Battle Royale" feel so far overall, though admittedly I like Basil and Hit's impromptu teamup in the anime more than Frost just going ham on U9 and the weak U7 characters. Speaking of the weak U7 guys... - First off there's Krillin literally being the first person eliminated from U7 almost immediately. He doesn't do anything at all. Gohan even steals his moment from the anime where he uses a Kamehameha to blast himself back in, as opposed to Krillin just doing it while simultaneously saving #18 from being eliminated and being some husbando-waifu tag-team. What was the point in him even being here? - Then there's Tien. I didn't think he could be portrayed worse than how Toei portrayed him in the anime, but hot damn was Toyotaro like "hold my beer" as Tien fires off ONE ineffectual Tribeam and then gets punched out. That one Plague of Gripes guy was right, Japan really DOES hate Tien. I've seen some people wonder why Beerus is so angry at them in the manga compared to the anime, but can you blame the guy?! Because at least they did SOMETHING in the anime! Here they were completely ineffective. What's worse, Goten and Trunks were actively called out on their lack of experience as a reason to not be included on the team, for fear of them being eliminated early. Well if Tien and Krillin were just going to go out like this, why not just bring in the bigger guns of Goten and Trunks again? Especially since Goten and Trunks might actually have been able to take on Frost? - Then we have Roshi. I get that Toyotaro is trying to play the power level game a bit here by having Krillin/Tien take on a vastly superior opponent like Frost...but if you look closely before Tien tries to Tribeam Frost you'll see that Roshi is blocking Frost's punches. ...HOW?! Frost is actively trying to eliminate them! Unlike the anime they don't even have the BS excuse of him training offscreen for a while, so unless something else states otherwise we have to assume we're looking at Roshi, who fell off the radar in classic DB, somehow holding his own against Frost who is actually trying to eliminate him! He's the weakest character here by a huge margin! Raditz is stronger than he is! Even holding back Frost should've had no difficulty getting rid of Roshi! - Alternatively they could've just brought Dende. He'd be equally as useless in a fight as Krillin, but at least he could just heal everyone provided U7 guarded him. Speaking of Frost, he looks like an utter idiot. I find it hard to believe this is honestly the same devious character from the previous tournament who used poison needles and stuff. "Sure guy from U7 who looks like me, I'll just use all my stamina immediately! There's no way you're also a deceiver like I am. I trust you implicitly." I mean come on. Frieza never came off as a master manipulator to me. He always ruled through absolute fear and power, not because he was some genius strategist. His most insidious plan before this point was having a guy with a laser ring hide and snipe someone, remember? That Frost fell for this doesn't speak to Frieza's abilities at all, only to Frost's stupidity. Personally, I felt Frieza's betrayal was handled better in the anime. For one, Frost was less trusting of Frieza in the anime. This in turn made Frieza devise a strategy to earn his confidence, one that didn't require sacrificing 2-3 fellow team members off the bat. A point was specifically made earlier about Frost not being able to limit his power compared to Frieza with his decades of torture experience who could. So Frieza runs up to Gohan and just starts hitting him. Gohan immediately realizes that Frieza is just messing around, and plays along. This results in Frost, who has both Gohan and Frieza at gunpoint Death Beam point, to lower his guard and trust Frieza, who then knocks him off the stage. Frost also wasn't immediately just Frieza's puppet and picked off U7 members because they'd isolated themselves, not because Daddy Frieza told him to. U9 as a whole I feel was handled better in the manga (not much better, but the bar isn't set very high) but jarringly enough the Trio de Dangers fared worse compared to the anime. Again, it's so weird how sometimes the anime and manga just have everything flipped around. In the anime U9's team as a whole was terrible but the Trio were at least something of a threat. Here the Trio doesn't even use any special abilities, they just blitz Gohan as a team. No poison from Lavender to disable Gohan or Bergamo absorbing Gohan's attacks to power himself up, just a triple Zerg Rush, no special attacks or techniques beyond teamwork. The closest we get is Basil kicking Gohan a little bit, when in the anime Basil was literally the guy who scored First Blood as the first to eliminate someone in the ToP. Also there wasn't a scene of Frieza torturing the U9 Bat Guy. I am sad. I also wasn't a fan of Piccolo hesitating like that. It felt really out-of-character. If anything it should've been Gohan who hesitated, then Piccolo or Frieza being the one to blast him off. Piccolo has no qualms whatsoever about finishing off downed adversaries, even post-Kami he was going to murder what was left of Babadi for being the pest that he was before Buu regenerated from Majin Vegeta's attack. But now with U7's survival on the line he hesitates? I don't buy it. LOL. This is so true. Gohan, one chapter ago: Gohan now: EDIT: I forgot! Toyotaro actually said what Dr. Rota's ability is! Why would he do that? Show don't tell Toyotaro! Everyone knows Rota's REAL ability is to

At best some might be revamped to make more sense or be tailored to the weaker Z-fighters to fight. However, I'm not really sure how much screen time and actual action will be given to the supporting cast and antagonists. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Krillin and Tien get knocked out even sooner and not be given highlight chapters, like they got highlight episodes, just to show case the chaotic nature of the tournament and how anyone can be knocked out. 17 and Roshi will be safe as stand outs since they were elements the fans seemed to really love in the anime. Gohan and Piccolo could be testing ground for other Universe 6 and Universe 11 opponents, to highlight them. All in all I don't really expect this manga to improve on this arc in a drastic way that will elevate character development and better characterization for the other universes or Z-fighters that got shafted in the anime (like Krillin, Tien, Piccolo, etc.). In the worlds of Dragon Ball Abridged Cooler, someone pick up that phone because I fucking called it. Seriously though where are you guys reading the manga? I'm a bit mixed whether Krillin and Tien (possibly Roshi too) getting shafted was a good thing or not.
On one side I really liked how well Roshi performed, but this is only because it was good to see him kick so much ass since a long period of inactivity (barring RoF). Basically, it was only good for fan service.
On the other hand Krilin managing to shaft two dudes (one who even appeared in the intro) so quickly made little sense. It was clearly more fan service so none of U7 went away with at least 2 or 3 eliminations. It only skewed things more in their favor. In a tournament where 10 of the strongest warriors of every universe participate, they should not stand any chance.
What truly bothered me more than Krilin and Tien getting shafted was that the trio de dangers didn't have their abilities nor their development.
Also, despite this was too centered in U7-U6, 5 dudes of U3 are already eliminated. We may see the Giant Robot and Hatchiyack clone faster.
